Overseas Arrivals 'Approaching Two Million'

Thursday, November 8, 2012
PHUKET: The Director of Commercial Affairs for Phuket has revealed that 1,945,887 international passport-holders came through Phuket Immigration in the first nine months of the year.

Director Prakong Rakwong said that the total consisted of 1,799,216 people who had arrived through Phuket International Airport and 146,671 people who had come on yachts or cruise ships.

The total for the airport was down 2.02 percent on last year while the arrivals by sea are up 4.45 percent.

Remarkably, applications to register hotels on Phuket have fallen by 91.30 percent, he said, with just two applications to October 1 in 2012.

Applications for Bureau of Investment status were down 20 percent for Phuket, latest figures reveal.

Registered unemployment has improved from 0.38 percent in the first nine months of 2011 to 0.21 percent in 2012.

Very confusing figures, including arrivals and departures it has been reported 9.3 is the estimated figures for the year. Again, previous reports have stated airport arrivals are on the up and up.

Editor Comment:

No real confusion. As we've pointed out more than once, 9.3 divided by two then divided by two again gives you an approximate total for this year's international visitors. No conflict there.

why is that remarkable? phuket is full, where you want to build new hotels? on the bottom of the sea or in the sky?

just spent some R&R in Phuket..never seen so little tourist foot traffic on the streets with all but empty bars and restaurants.mostly eastern European being spoken on the beach...local businesses say many tourists are on very inexpensive all in packaged cocooning deals at resorts..hard to compete.
