Worse Weather to Come as Phuket Braves Strong Winds, Storms

Wednesday, July 31, 2013
PHUKET: Forecasters from Phuket's Southern Meteorological Centre (West Coast) are predicting strong winds and storms this week that should keep small boats ashore.

There's an 80 percent chance of rain on Phuket today and tomorrow, say the forecasters, with worse to come on Friday and Saturday.

Their advice is for speedboats and other small vessels on Phuket to stay close to shore or risk encountering sizeable waves and winds of 50-60kmh.

In the interests of tourist safety, ambassadors in Bangkok and honorary consuls on Phuket have urged authorities to make sure small boat ''captains'' do not put to sea in bad weather.

Technically speaking the crane does not seem to have collapsed but rather toppled over. Not that it matters much.

With the sinking of yet another vessel today one wonders how is it that a foreign journalist is more clued up on dangerous weather than those who travel the seas to make a living.

Maybe they do know but just don't care.

Mai pen rai, sabai sabai, mai tong kid mak.

I am often surprised, Thai Mike, how the work of our Thai reporters is overlooked.

This is just the start thousands of Chinese & Koreans arrive daily what will they do but get stuffed into speedboats with cowboy crews. Sad to say this is not the last headline this monsoon season.

Essentially, irrespective of environmental factors, since the operator of crane made a balance risk benefit decision to work beyond the limits of the cranes capacity; he in the end is ultimately to blame.
