White masks, yellow supporters, anti-red protest: color them angry

Phuket Sees White Over Deputy PM's Phuket Slur: Anti Red Protest Coming

Wednesday, June 5, 2013
PHUKET: The White Mask movement is organising a protest on Phuket on Sunday over a Deputy Prime Minister who blamed Phuket voters for lack of infrastructure on the island.

In a television interview at the weekend, Deputy PM Dr Plodprasop Suraswadi said that there were reasons why the Government chose not to go ahead with a planned exhibition and conference centre on Phuket.

''It's not our fault, it's their fault that they didn't vote for us,'' Dr Plodprasop said.

His comments have angered many on Phuket who see the approach of the governing Pheu Thai as an extension of the populism and pork barrelling of disgraced former Prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

A Facebook and social media campaign is underway to assemble people at Phket City's Saphan Hin public park at 5pm on Sunday in a protest.

Word quickly spread through Phuket's media today and the protest has the potential to be quite large.

The white masks, representing British anarchist Guy Fawkes, have been used by the Anonymous movement internationally in protests.

The masks have been adopted in Thailand recently by protesters. Pheu Thai supporters have also turned out in red pro-Thaksin and Pheu Thai masks.

The organisers of Sunday's protest say a white mask isn't necessary and that people are welcome to turn up bringing just their faces.

Any direct connection with the ''yellow'' Democrat Party or its ''ultra yellow''People's Alliance for Democracy supporters is denied.

However, because Phuket votes mostly Democrat, there will be yellow people in white masks at Sunday's anti-red protest.

Maybe they should ALL put a clown mask on, because its a circus in my opinion.

It's probably true... Truth hurts, I suppose for the minority...

Phuketians should deserve a better respect by those pretentious politicians who think they are above pebble people.
Note that most of tax revenue sent to Bangkok, just a fractional part of paid taxes are coming back to Phuket since too long.

And the ''taxes'' at Immigration don't come back, either.

Pork Barreling is correct- when the reds were in the North West prospered, when the Yellows were in it suffered. Vice versa for Phuket. Vote for us and we'll look after you, if you don't, som nom na. Just another form of bribery on a massive scale. It's the arrogance of politicians who will actually acknowledge this openly which is shameful.

So he said out loud what they are all doing: vote for me and I will reward you, vote for somebody else and I won't help you unless I am forced to.

I do not agree with the Deputy PM's comment and view it as pretty much an equivalent of Mitt Romney's "49 percent" ordeal, but this entire White Mask movement has really been rather comically ironic. At their recent gathering, the protesters were calling for a coup d'etat and practically seeking an overthrow of the democratically elected governments, (the PT and TRT parties are the only political parties ever to have won a parliamentary majority in Thai political history).

If I could, I would protest as well, not because of any polical differences, but because what Deputy PM Dr Plodprasop Suraswadi said, was so arrogant and ridiculous, even if true. If he is the best Thailand can get, as a Deputy PM, then Thailand is in big trouble.

They are good at talking; not so good at action; it never fails to amaze me how quickly they can whip up a crowd for a protest or a blockade!

Do the people in Thailand actually understand the meaning of this Mask - or do they wear it because they think it looks cool?

And if this is not corruption what is?
"You only get the benefits if you voted for me..."
Good luck on this government trying to tackle the issues of corruption when the Deputy Prime Minister can make a statement like this.

I note the comment that tax revenues are remitted to bangkok and do not make it back to Phuket. Absolute rubbish. The biggest problem is that taxes are not being collected and remitted properly. A large part of the tax base stays in Phuket because it is the local government assessing many of the taxes. The bigger issue is the endemic corruption in Phuket. The central government is funding the local health services, public safety, pensions and many big ticket infrastructure projects. It is not the central government's fault if their is corruption at the local level.

Cudos for the vice PM. Trash talking the poor red voters of Phuket. That's something. He could have said: you do not vote for us, so you get this governor. That police. And hey, let's squeeze the goose. Eat your rubbish, not majority red voters. Nice.
