PHUKET: Police all over Phuket are hunting a violent fugitive who bashed an officer and fled from a football game yesterday.
Several police approached Wirat Prabpet, 36, as he played in a Bang Tao Cup match at the local school about 6pm.
Wirat turned on Lieutenant Colonel Sommai Ornkam, breaking his jaw and loosening teeth. Other players joined in the assault, according to witnesses, before the gang fled.
Cherng Talay Mayor Ma-Ann Samran was among the spectators watching the game who chose not to intervene.
Lt Colonel Sommai was knocked out in the attack. He was taken to Thalang Hospital then transferred to Vachira Phuket Hospital in Phuket City, where senior police visited him today.
Officers throughout Phuket are on the lookout for Khun Wirat, who is now wanted in addition for the assault of an officer.
He is also accused of attempted murder in a previous bag-snatch at knifepoint in Patong.
Visiting the injured and bruised policeman today were Colonel Chanuchan Chonsuwat, Superintendent of Cherng Talay Police Station, Deputy Superintendent Colonel Sane Yawila and Colonel Peerayut Garajedee of Phuket Police.
