A speedboat crew member holds up his name during tests yesterday

Two Crew Fail Drugs Test at Phuket Tourist Speedboat Dock

Friday, September 13, 2013
PHUKET: Marine Police raided tourist speedboats at Royal Phuket Marina yesterday and detected signs of drug-taking among crews.

Nineteen speedboat crew members were given urine tests for drugs and two crew from different boats tested positive.

Further tests on the urine samples will determine whether the positive signs were caused by illicit drugs or legal medication.

One speedboat was found to lack insurance.

Marine Police have been conducting drugs tests and document checks at beaches and piers around Phuket as part of a campaign to ensure the safety of tourists on Phuket.

The focus has been on jet-ski operators, mostly at Patong where the majority of jet-skis are based, and on day-trip speedboat crews.

Editor Comment:

The chemicals in the test react to both illegal drugs and to some kinds of legal medication. Further testing has always been required to sort out which has caused the positive test.

Most of speedboat and tour boat crew are uneducated as Phuketwan pictures present them with barefoot, no t-shirt, long hair, etc.... We may understand why tourists may be scare by boarding speedboat tours in Phuket, Phang Nga and Krabi.

In Thailand, there is no marine training center in the Andaman Sea and the 2 marine training centers are in Samut Prakan and Pattaya.

Therefore, all boat captains have no choice but to work one year at least with a boat operator company and to be eligible to apply to get a helmsman boat licence by complacency witout proper training in marine regulation, safety and rescue.

Boat operators in Thailand along the Andaman Sea would be happy to have a marine training center to get better skilled boat crews.
