Patong Mayor Pian Keesin (left) and Phuket Governor Tri Augkaradacha

Phuket Governor Green Lights One-Way

Saturday, December 18, 2010
PATONG'S one-way road reversal should happen early in 2011. Phuket Governor Tri Augkaradacha has thrown his support behind the change and reforms to tuk-tuk and rental parking along Patong's beach road.

Signs will be posted on Monday promoting the one-way as changing in about 15 days, the Superintendent of Kathu Police Station, Colonel Arayapan Pukbuakao, said today.

''We are delighted to have the support of the Governor,'' he said. ''There are only a few obstacles to overcome now.''

Talks will be continuing next week to reach agreement with the motorcycle and car rental business proprietors who currently monopolise the prime parking spots along Patong's beach road.

More talks are also expected in the next few days with tuk-tuk drivers, who occupy all the parking on the right-hand side of beach road between Prachanukhro Road (the Absolute intersection) and Soi Bangla in the present clockwise one-way.

Motorcycle renters have also recently spread further along beach road to occupy space outside Loma Park. Without enforcement, solving the present parking quandary could see another problem develop further along beach road.

''The deal is coming but it's not quite sealed yet,'' one observer told Phuketwan. ''No firm date will be possible to set until everyone is in agreement. But it does seem certain to happen.''

Phuket Governor Tri's appearance at a meeting yesterday on Patong's new transport plan added considerable support to the one-way revolution.

And the governor made no bones about it: he told officials who gathered at the Patong Municipality building that he wants the matter resolved in time for the next ''Phuket Parliament'' meeting with honorary consuls and embassy representative in February.

Yesterday's meeting heard that Soi Sansabai - an extension of Soi Bangla - would stay as it is and not be a part of proposed changes.

The Mayor of Patong, Pian Keesin, advocated splitting the present space along beach road 50/50 between rental vehicles and public parking but prominent businessman Preechavude ''Prab'' Keesin, who is also President of the Taxi Federation of Patong, advocated a 30/70 split in favor of private parking.

The new call system that will enable registered tuk-tuks and taxis to be hailed on demand by resorts in Patong is expected to begin around the same time as the Patong one-way is reversed.

Khun Prab is to speak to motorcycle and vehicle renters next week in advance of the reversal of the one-way system. The agreement of the majority of renters will be desirable.

Reversing the one-way would bring an end to awkward transfers between the beach road and parallel Rat-U-Tit 200 Pi Road, where motorists and riders have to proceed down the right-hand side of the road.

It would also be more aesthetically pleasing, allowing visitors to travel along the beach road and take in the view as most of them arrive in Patong.

Yet to be clarified is the issue of making pedestrian crossings safe.

Tourists and locals have said that crossing Patong's one-way is risky, and it will only become more dangerous if the one-way is reversed and regular crossers continue to look for danger in the wrong direction.

Well, this all sounds very encouraging. Dare I get my hopes up?

If only they would repair the New Road, it would almost be a perfect solution to the traffic problem. Right now it is almost suicide to drive that way at night, especially with a motorbike.

These kind of changes happening right in the middle of high season should make for some very comical scenarios....and in line with what Fritz Pinquin is suggesting...in order to repair that road properly, they will have to rip it up completely right down to the soil and start from scratch...as we have all seen, they continue to do worthless patch up work on it that lasts maybe two weeks before the potholes reappear again.

More pie in the sky.

They haven't yet reached agreement with the motorcycle and car renters, or the tuk-tuk drivers along beach road or the motorcycle renters outside Loma Park.

"The deal is coming but it's not quite sealed yet," one observer told Phuketwan.

Who was that? The som-tam lady?

Ahhh, but Zig - Khun Ta Mac's contract to 'fix' the road is a very complicated one with loads of penalty clauses if he doesn't get so much work a month. proper kerbing would have helped, also putting the drains down BEFORE the tarma was laid, not after. This road had so much potential now its just become yet another failed project.

So what exactly is happening to direction of traffic there then. I remember it when traffic on beach road went in both directions and driven on the one way system...Are we going back to traffic in both directions?

Editor Comment:

The one-way system is being reversed in direction. Clockwise becomes counter-clockwise to avoid motorists having to switch to the wrong (right-hand) side of the road in the two-way lanes that run between beach road and the parallel Rat-U-Tit 200 Pi Road. Nobody has said why it wasn't done this way in the first place. The one-way was introduced to ease congestion.

Clockwise on even days and Counter-clockwise on odd days, similar to the parking regulations. Then all businesses will be happy and profitable.

How stupid in the first place to have the one way traffic going clock wise in Patong and then having right hand side traffic on the connecting streets! If counter clockwise, the traffic would always be automatically left hand side traffic. Why was this option not chosen in the first place? Mishap in the brain section?

Perhaps it seemed more logical at the time for traffic to turn left at the first opportunity into Rat-U-Tit 200 Pi rather than continue on to beach road. We're not aware of anyone questioning the logic at the time.

there is no logic or common sense in phuket. only baht

It must be a hard life as an omniscient being, john, floating above Phuket, peering into every home and office on the island and finding not a single bit of logic or commonsense. Not even among expats, eh? Not even at your place?

This makes no logic: Editor... "Perhaps it seemed more logical at the time for traffic to turn left at the first opportunity into Rat-U-Tit 200 Pi rather than continue on to beach road."
You also enter Patong from Karon and have to go all the way to the beach rd now. Same same but different, logic included...

Editor Comment:

At least 10 times more traffic comes from the road over Patong Hill than from Karon. If the amount of traffic coming over the hill remained at the level of the traffic from Karon into Patong, there would be no need for a one-way.

I agree with a previous comment about the New Road. It is an absolute disgrace with its potholes and patchwork quilt surface.
And it has been like it for two years and it is a safety hazard.
If the New Road was made half way decent then all "through" traffic could use it, instead of crawling along the obstacle course of the beach road (or Rat U Thit).
Regarding the one way system specifically, I think there are three feeder roads (between Rat-U-Thit and the beach road) where people travel on the wrong side of the road (semi-legally).
If you made the feeder roads one way ( say two in one direction and one in the other) then perhaps you would not have to completely change the overall clockwise/anti-clockwise directions?
