Maxim Kasutin, 27, was probably drunk and lost at the time, the officers added.
He escaped when the Silver Honda Accord crashed into an improvised water tank at a Burmese laborers' camp in southern Phuket and probably watched it burst into flames.
The crash came at 1.30am on a dirt track off Yodsanae Road, which runs off Chao Fa Road West in the backblocks of Chalong.
Mr Kasutin left the scene and it wasn't until 7.30am that his relatives contacted Chalong Police Station to report the crash, police said.
They believed Mr Kasutin had been visiting a friend but in the early morning darkness lost his way and crashed and had probably been drinking.
A 10-metre drop over a cliff was just a metre away.
With these sorts of stories I'd suggest it's perhaps best if comments/observations weren't permitted as it allows a certain type of correspondent to vent their particular prejudices which are not really in anyone's interest. I know the editor takes all off-the-wall commentators to task, but I'm sure he has better things to do than to respond to the ill-considered vapourings of some contributors to Phuketwan.

Editor Comment:
''ill-considered vapourings''? I think you've just given me a new response for up-market readers who have nothing of value to say. Thank you.
Comments are seldom blocked because I'm here to bat away the bulldust or dispel the vaporings with a well-placed fart. There are days when instead of reporting I am mostly batting and farting. But i prefer that to shutting down Comments.
