Phuket Billboards to Go Overhead
By Chutima Sidasathian Tuesday, October 15, 2013
PHUKET: Visitors and residents of one of Phuket's five-star holiday regions are about to become better informed about local events.
The Mayor of Cherng Talay, Ma-Ann Samran, has been impressed with overhead billboards in Bangkok and plans three for the Surin, Bang Tao and Cherng Talay region.
He has allocated a budget of 1.6 million baht for the project and is now awaiting approval of the Phuket Roads Department to proceed.
''I saw this style of billboard in Bangkok and thought 'Wow! That's fantastic!,'' he told Phuketwan. ''We could use some of those.''
Khun Ma-Ann plans to put the overhead billboards on the road at the entrance to Laguna Phuket, at the junction where motorists turn off the main road to Surin beach, and at the entrance to the local Tesco Lotus supermarket.
Mayor Ma-Ann has driven the building of a football stadium with floodlights close to Surin beach and has a proposal to add public walkways and a large restaurant in parkland on the foreshore.

Yep, just what Phuket needs, more billboards, I guess there's no longer any room on the side of the roads, so yeah, have to put them overhead. Start with 3...how long before we see more? I thought they were "trying" to reduce the number of billboards.

This is all very good if you first get rid of all the bill boards on the side of the road.
All these proposed changes they are still pouring concrete down at Surin beach when are all the illegal constructions coming down, or will it be said its high season we cannot do anything now. Come on let's see some action.

Yeah well, when you have 8 lane roads going in the same direction, maybe this type of billboard would work. What can you get for a 5 m "billboard" along a 2 lane 2 way street?

And putting up a restaurant in parkland? The parkland on the island at Nai Harn lake is filled with families from Kata-Karon and Patong who bemoan the lack of decent parkland in their own communities.
Better served would be a good quality swingset, slides, and other attractions for children.

If phuket was a cup of coffee, they would keep pouring curdled milk in it and hope that one day, it would taste good.

Really?? This is what Phuket needs?? Where do they find these people?? Is this guy for real?? Fully agree with Treelover - use the money on things people actually want, like decent quality kids areas - PLEASE no more monstrosities like these !!!

This has to be a joke. Phuket needs less bill boards not more.
Phuket is still very green except you cannot see it for the advertising hoardings

Phuket is the best tourism destination in the world with a professional gestion in eco-tourism by cutting all trees along the roads to erect large signboards and electric poles in order birds have support for their nests and drop their shits directly on the too many cars, minibus, trucks, tuk-tuks and taxis in traffic jams or parking illegally on pavements.

A Billboard has one intention and that is to GET Attention. So also the Drivers Attention. This is allways at cost of the so MUCH needed Road Safety & allways at cost off keeping a Green & Natural imago. Get Rid off those Ugly signs also all the paid Road Signs for business purposes. Often located at locations where road safety needs open viewing. Many U turns on main roadster have signs endangering your driving & overview.
Less signs is better then more or bigger.
New huge LED Screens with Movies and advertisings on it cause by there pr??sence & bright light only more accidents, injured & deaths.

Phuket has become such an horrible place to live in.
Look no further opposite Tesco Lotus Samkhong: the Billion Dollar Plaza was a nice sino portuguese style construction. As soon as owners came in, they covered the facades with ugly billboards, one bigger than another.
It's the same everywhere in Phuket. No law to counter this visual pollution?

Oh, how I wonder who will reap the dividends? When the 50 year old Banyan tree near the bypass intersection was chopped down for a huge billboard, I realized the island simply has no sustainable future. It is as rotten as it gets and I doubt any of us really knows the extent

Don't panic everybody it was already reported 2 years ago that all billboards would be coming down! Oh scrap that one let's just put up some across the roads instead!!! Typical Phuket authority thinking and doing, speak about it because it's what people want to hear, but when it comes down to it we all know it won't happen. 2 years and counting before this place has no tourists to fill the pockets anymore!!.
