The ruins of the no-name beer bar at Bang Tao beach

Phuket Beach Beer Bar Blaze Was Arson, Say Police

Wednesday, September 4, 2013
PHUKET: Police believe a beer bar on Bang Tao beach was deliberately set on fire and destroyed in a 300,000 baht blaze last night.

Flames and smoke were noticed at the no-name bar behind the Sunwing Resort & Spa Phuket at Bang Tao about 11.50pm.

Cherng Talay police responded, along with two fire trucks. But a strong breeze helped the blaze to raze the bar, causing damaged estimated at 300,000 baht.

Owner Sanong Orndee, 59, was serving as a volunteer at a checkpoint in Phuket City while his wife Siriya Jaideesorrarot, 63, was asleep and did not know the bar was burning.

Forensic officers will take a closer look today but Khun Sanong said there was a dispute over the bar.

As a volunteer with the police, the owner of the bar seems to be well connected.
Maybe the disputer thought, there is no independent settlement possible?

Beer will more more expensive in near future as according to NewsPapers, the excise tax ceiling for both fermented beverages such as beers and wines, and distilled beverages such as whisky and brandy, will increases to 2,000 baht per litre of 100% alcohol content. Under the current tax code, the Excise Department collects taxes on fermented beverages at a maximum rate of 100 baht per litre of 100% alcohol content or 60% of the product value, whichever is higher. It collects taxes on distilled beverages with a ceiling of 400 baht per litre of 100% alcohol content or 50% of the value, whichever is higher..
