PHUKET: A review of operational needs and manpower resources across Laguna Phuket is underway, says the Director now in charge, Ravi Chandran. Phuketwan understands that some redundancies are involved.
Mr Chandran, who is presently serving as MD of Laguna Lang Co (Vietnam) and Director of Laguna Resorts & Hotels Plc, describes the review as ''part of the company's periodic analysis of business strategies to align with the changing dynamics of Phuket tourism industry.''
Among those leaving Laguna Phuket today, we have learned, are the existing small staff of the Wedding Chapel and nine people from Destination Marketing, including its director, Debbie Dionysius.
Ms Dionysius, in a career stretching back 18 years at Laguna Phuket, has become the face of the place for many.
She has been the guiding hand behind the success of Phuket's two biggest international sports events, the Laguna Phuket marathon and the Laguna Phuket triathlons.
Like Madonna and other rock stars, it is only necessary on Phuket to say ''Debbie'' for people to know who you are talking about.
Former Managing Director Michael Ayling, who left Laguna Phuket 13 months ago to start his own business, NuoBello, said today:
''Debbie has been a significant contributor to the event scene in Phuket which is very much the envy of other rival tourism locations that have tried to replicate without success the quality of events that Debbie has introduced and developed.
''The continued improvement of the Laguna Phuket Triathlon over the years was very much due to the capability, vision and passion of Debbie.
''And she has been the architect of the Laguna Phuket Marathon and the Ironman 70.3 Laguna Phuket and the driver behind making these events a great success.''
Four Destination Marketing staff remain. Ms Dionysius arrived at Phuket during the tenure of MD James Batt, who united the disparate resorts and, with her expertise, gave Laguna Phuket its distinctive colors and brand.
Mr Chandran told Phuketwan he was currently overseeing the operations of both the Phuket and Vietnam Laguna portfolios ''with the support of a strong senior management team in Laguna Phuket.''
He told Phuketwan: ''Laguna Phuket currently employs close to 3000 associates. Like in most companies, LRH periodically conducts comprehensive reviews of its operations and when the need arises, implement necessary measures to realign its business goals and objectives.
''These exercises allow the company to adapt to the constantly changing dynamics in the Phuket tourism industry.
''As a result of such a review, the Laguna Phuket Golf Club will soon undergo a major renovation of the entire 18-hole golf course in phases and consequently some of our staff have taken the opportunity to participate in the company's attractive early retirement program.
''The Wedding Chapel will continue to offer its services and will be managed by Angsana Laguna Phuket. The operations of Quest and Laguna Tours remain unchanged.
''Destination Marketing will continue to perform its normal functions with more streamlined operational structure and strategies.
''Signature events such as the Triathlon, Marathon etc will continue to be annual activities of Laguna Phuket. All these departments and events remain an integral part of Laguna Phuket.''
It's believed the sale of two of the key resort properties within the seven-resort Laguna Phuket precinct over the past two years has led to a reassessment of the brand's collective interests.
Laguna's property arm has been highly successful, recently announcing the Phase 2 construction of The Shores condo project within the Laguna precinct.
