Oleg Fomenko, 31, said he was drunk and smashed a monk's image

Drunk Russian Tourist 'Smashed Phuket Monk's Image With Crowbar'

Friday, October 25, 2013
PHUKET: A Russian tourist told police he damaged the lifesize statue of a monk in a Phuket temple ''because I was drunk.''

Oleg Fomenko, 31, smashed the monk's image and damaged the side of a parked truck with a crowbar as he walked back to his hotel after a night out.

Police were called to the Karon temple and reviewed security camera footage that showed what happened.

The following night, officers from Karon Police Station staked out the temple and caught Mr Fomenko as he walked through, wearing the same shirt.

Mr Fomenko, staying in a hotel in Patak Road, could only explain his actions by saying that he had been drunk.

He had been angry because of a small cut on his hand, he said.

Tourist of the year award to this drop kick.
Didims had a tiny cut on his hand so he committed sacrilege.
Lucky there where no people for him to attack.

It wasn't the drunkenness, it was a slightly sore hand.

Please forgive this man, my fellow countryman. He did not know what he was doing. Pay tribute to all on merit. I'm sorry.

Easy mistake to make. Who doesn't carry a crowbar when going out for a night's drinking? In Russia at least, it's an essential accessory.

I am a Russian myself, and I am ashamed. I hope the Thais lock Mr Fomenko for a year at least and make from him an example for those Russian drunkers.

Oh come on Mikhail, intoxication is not an excuse for bad behavior.
This man should now apologise, pay to have the statue repaired, make a donation to the temple and then be deported

Are this the quality tourists Phuket targets? Sorry but motivate them to go to another country, last high season most bad behaviour reported was from russian tourists, the season is starting, the problems with russian starts again, peace is gone for a few months in Phuket.

Tourists are doing a better job than the locals painting Phukets future. The winds of change are close at hand, sadly.
