PHUKET: If you've ever wondered what it's like to get the feeling you're about to drown, a video taken by Phuket's Daren Jenner can almost put you in the water.
A frequent visitor to Phuket's Surin beach, Jenner was bodysurfing off Poipu Reef in Hawaii recently with a video camera strapped to a paddle on his hand when he heard a call for help.
A snorkeller was floundering in the water, in trouble. As a retired paramedic and volunteer lifeguard, Jenner, 55, was just the man you want in the water nearby at such a time.
In most rescues in the surf, the aim is to keep the person calm so you can assist them safely back to shore. That's what Jenner did, recording the process as he went.
Approaching the breakers close to shore, a board surfer came to lend a hand. The snorkeller, a 52 year old man from California, was exceedingly grateful for the help.
'Good Morning America' carried an article about the rescue. Jenner told the reporter: ''You can just see the look on his face, that look of terror, that look that I think I'm . . . I think I'm dying,''
He added: ''I'm definitely not a hero. The fulltime lifeguards, the rescue swimmers from the Coast Guard, those are heroes all right. I'm just a bodysurfer.''
Handy to have around. The article reported that two men in their 30s drowned two weeks ago while snorkeling off Hawaii's coast.
Jenner's advice is to always find a lifeguarded area and if there isn't one at a beach, don't go in too far.
