PHUKET: Eleven Burmese crew from a sunken supply ship survived in seas north of Phuket by clinging to upturned ice box coolers for hours until rescuers arrived.
The crew had plenty to choose from - there were 300 ice box coolers on board the sunken vessel, all being taken to offshore fishing fleets.
The supply ship sailed from Burma and was overturned in high seas off the coast from Ranong, the Thai port on the border with Burma, on Monday.
Thai rescue vessels picked up four crew initially then other vessels found the remaining seven crew about 4pm yesterday, all safe and delighted to be rescued.
Less fortunate was a Burmese sailor, ''Mr Song,'' aged 24.
He went to jump between two fishing boats at port on Phuket yesterday, slipped and banged his chin on a bulwark as he plunged into the water, and was dead when other sailors pulled him out.

The day that readers are as concerned with the welfare of eleven Burmese - in a 'spectacular rescue'.. if only they were all farang tourists..
Is the same day people will truly be color and race blind.
