You can be part of the solution to reduce the stray dog and cat population in Phuket. In addition to stray animals, Soi Dog Foundation encourages owners to take their dog or cat to the mobile clinic for sterilisation, without any expense.

Voluntary donations of course will be a big help to save other lives. The mobile clinic will provide sterilisation and rabies vaccination weekdays Monday-Friday, from 9am-4pm with no exception for public holidays.

Please do not feed animals after 8pm and give no water after midnight on the day before you bring them for sterilsation. Please bring animals for sterilisation in the morning and plan to get them in the afternoon.

Another way to help is through adoption. Each year in Vietnam, an estimated five million dogs are tortured and slaughtered to provide dog meat to restaurants.

Dog meat is eaten for a number of reasons that span cultural, spiritual, seasonal and medicinal factors, but in reality has only become mass market in the last 40 to 50 years. In certain parts of Vietnam (mainly in the north of the country), dog meat is the meal of choice for family celebrations, get-togethers with friends and parties.

In Vietnamese culture, the dog is traditionally associated with luck, and towards the end of each lunar month consumption of dog meat increases as consumers believe it will bring them good luck for the next month, and keep bad luck away.

With consumption of dog meat in Vietnam at such a high level, demand often outstrips supply. Dog farming in the country exists on a relatively small scale, with most farms being small, unregulated businesses, each providing around 150 dogs a year for the trade.

Family pets are often stolen to meet the demand for dog meat. One dog thief was lynched and killed by an angry mob recently.

However domestic supply does not meet demand, so organised crime gangs have turned to stealing dogs from the streets in Thailand, Laos and Cambodia, and illegally transporting them across the borders into Vietnam.

Authorities have in recent years become more successful in intercepting the lorries and trucks trafficking the animals, meaning that there are now over 1500 dogs being kept at a purpose built shelter in Thailand, all who desperately need adopting.

John Dalley, Vice President of the Soi Dog foundation stated that ''There is a real need to find homes for as many of these dogs as possible. The majority are stolen pets and extremely friendly but are struggling to survive in a shelter environment. It is extremely sad to see many of these dogs simply giving up and losing the will to live.

''Before being snatched from the streets they were used to living with families and cannot adapt to shelter life. They need human interaction and stimulating environments in which to live. A shelter environment simply can???t provide that.''

Soi Dog will be holding mobile adoption events in Bangkok for these rescued dogs so you can meet them in person in the near future.

All dogs offered for adoption are vaccinated and sterilised. Any dogs adopted within Thailand are free to good homes with complimentary flights kindly sponsored by Nok Air from Bangkok.

Please contact cristy@soidog.org or on 093 6851332 for all English adoption enquires. For adoption enquiries in Thai please contact dayin@soidog.org or 086 3039806 ( Bangkok ) and tare@soidog-foundation.org or 093 7099622 ( Phuket )

There sure are a lot of three-legged soi dogs hopping about roundabouts, and other soi dog haunts.

If you have a a pet you love please do not use these mobile clinics. Of the 3 animals over the years that we have taken there 2 died during sterilisation.

Yes they like to amputate and deem the dogs fit for survival and dump them back on the streets.

Atleast SoiDogs try to do something positive. You have had a rough time losing 2 dogs and I am sorry for your loss.

John and his team do a fantastic job, and prevent us from turning into another Bali. Their campaigns have saved thousands of canine lives and protected the human population. If you ever have the good fortune to meet John or his wife Jill you will know instantly their deep humanity. If you are looking for great cause please come and save the Dolphins from Greedy Russian Developers in Chalong.

Actually farang888 the dogs are not hopping but hoping for a better life.

I will NEVER visit Vietnam whilst their barbarism exists. And yes, I am aware other countries in the region also have pockets of this disgusting practice. And yes, I am a life long vegetarian.
