PHUKET: Looking for a romantic resort? A place for a wedding in a superb setting? Want to bring a choir and perhaps an orchestra, too?
We've got just the place for you. And at present there's room for everyone because the Crowne Plaza Phuket Panwa Beach Resort has just opened its doors.
Did we say doors? Actually, doors are not appropriate. The entrance is a kind of Alice-in-Wonderland passageway, through a curtain of latticework, over a manmade stone stream crossing, down a flight of stairs . . . and into the enchanted sunrise world of Phuket's east coast.
The full beauty of both the coast and the resort is revealed the closer guests come to the water's edge at Makham Bay.
Slowly, Phuket's east coast has earned popularity among those looking for a different experience to the Phuket wild west . . . but close enough to indulge in a fun night out if the mood takes hold.
The Crowne Plaza has become the resort with swiftest access to Phuket City and its shopping, as well being well-placed for those who wish to go further afield to Patong, Karon, Kata and Kamala.
The resort is just nine minutes' drive to old Phuket Town (we timed it), closer than the other resorts that now occupy much of Phuket's Cape Panwa and the ''Phuket sunrise coast.''
Rather than ascribing to the five-star grading system, the management prefers to call the sparkling new resort ''upscale.'' We'd say it's definitely sunrise upscale.
Like a good book, the first encounter on the shelf is just the beginning. The Crowne Plaza opens up to a broad beachfront with two large swimming pools and great views from most of the 224 rooms across the bay to Koh Tapao Yai and Koh Tapao Noi.
As Phuket develops more alternative attractions, paddling a kayak around the east coast waters is likely to grow more appealing.
The signature Thann spa has stylish rooms that urge you to collapse in a heap instantly. The alternative . . . relax in a giant bath with a view through the window over the bay.
Like a new puppy anxious to play, the Crowne Plaza Phuket Panwa Beach Resort is ready for just about anything.
It would almost be worth proposing to have an intimate three-day wedding blast for a couple of hundred people here.
The Crowne Plaza Phuket Panwa Beach Resort is a contender for Phuketwan's Phuket Resort of the Year 2012

Looks like a nice hotel, very modern and contemporary. Apart from the last photo where they have occupied the beach with deck chairs...tsk tsk
