Police question a woman at the karaoke bar on Phuket early today

Phuket Mother Arrested for Selling Daughter, 14, for Sex at Karaoke

Friday, July 12, 2013
PHUKET: Police arrested a woman at a Phuket karaoke bar early today and charged her with selling her 14-year-old daughter as a prostitute.

The girl was reported to be one of two under-age children being offered for prostitution at the Music 999 karaoke bar in Kwang Road, Vichit, south of Phuket City.

Acting on a tip-off, a plainclothes policeman went to the karaoke and paid 3000 baht to take the 14-year-old to a hotel for the night.

Although the informant told police that two minors were involved, officers from Vichit Police Station only found one girl when they raided the bar about 1am today.

About 10 people at the karaoke were questioned and one tested positive for drugs.

The mother of the 14-year-old was arrested. She told police that she sold her daughter into prostitution to cover the rent on their apartment.

The girl will be taken into care. Police are expected to follow leads to try to trace the second girl.

There is no excuse for underage prostitution. There is poverty in Phuket especially during low season which this year seems very bad, but if you have not got morals a person has nothing. Well done to the agencies involved they should be proud.

Low season has never been this good, FF, at least in terms of visitor numbers.

Disgusting! Selling your daughter for 3,000 a night? What kind of apartment do they live in? Perhaps she'd like to get a 'free apartment' shared with 30 others in Phuket Prison.

@Fiesty Farang: Low season is not very bad this year!! Lots of tourists everywhere. Just not the ones that will drive to Kwang Road to abuse an underage girl.
Slowly, girly bars are disappearing around the island, and I'm glad about it.

Sorry, Editor, but we are not talking of the same thing.
More visitors doesn't lead to better business. As a business owner ,I can testify that this low season is very bad.
Ask the street vendors, the bar owners and the many souvenir shops, not the five-star hotels which dump their rooms to low-income all-inclusive tourists.
More tourism oddly means less income since the high-spending western tourists seem to stay away from overcrowded Phuket.

More visitors should lead to more revenue, hence the move in the industry to target visitors with spending power. But the low season is disappearing in terms of visitor numbers.

As you know Ed visitor numbers mean little to the general Thai population, restaurants, bars etc if there is a high percentage of Zero Baht tourists.

Ed, you may have an increase of 10% of visitors but if they spend 20 up to 30% less per day it is like a drop of 10% in income for all Phuket.
Also most of visitors are on package tours including air ticket, transfers, hotel and breakfast which provide good profit to oversea tour operators as they squeeze Phuket hotels and tour providers to get the cheapest prices which may be up to 50-60% of brochure prices.
At the end the hotels and tour providers are short in cash-flow to pay good staff and keep up to international standards as we can see it with boat tour operators which are sinking at regular space or are driven by non-educated and poorly trained local people.

Why are people here talking and complaining about a low season, when a 14- year old girl is probably abused by adult men, on more than one occasion. Are you all ignorant to the fact that this girl is scarred for life? Shame on all those winers that couldn't make a buck more than last year. I hope these sort of things don't happen to your children. They should take that girl away from her mother. Protect her, and if possible, find those that took advantage of her and lock them up.

this makes one wonder what the young girls life has been like leading up to this.

wife heard on Thai TV/radio? that the girl was very happy doing what she was doing in Chalong.."we have money and good life" quote approximate...always another side to a story.
What does "taken into care" actually mean and how will it benefit the girl....one wonders? Another example of laws selectively enforced ...and by THREE officers..exellent use of resources?

Editor Comment:

Are you mounting an argument in favor of underage sex, david? Some of your responses on this issue are a bit troubling. Of course, if a mother puts her mind to it, she can persuade a child to believe anything. The reason why there are these kinds of laws is to give individuals the chance to grow to adulthood before they make key decisions for themselves. Now you know why.
