The badly cut motorcycle taxi rider is treated in Patong last night

Phuket Blade Attack: Motorcycle Taxi Rider Slashed in Drive-By Pickup Assault

Friday, March 13, 2015
PHUKET: A motorcycle taxi driver suffered serious cuts when a man with a long knife attacked him in Patong last night in what police believe was a carefully planned revenge assault.

The latest serious violence in the Phuket holiday hub came at 7.45pm when a man jumped down from the back of a pickup truck as it paused in passing a motorcycle taxi rank in the road behind the Jungceylon shopping centre.

The man, carrying a long sparta knife, slashed motorcycle taxi rider Pawaras Phonjarung, 35, before climbing back into the truck and speeding off.

Khun Pawaras was swiftly carried to Patong Hospital and required 30 stitches to the cuts inflicted in the savage slashing.

Kathu Police Station officers believe both Khun Pawaras and his attacked are from the province of Nakhon Si Thammarat and may have a history of conflict.

The brutal attack followed the stabbing to death of a security guard outside Taipan nightclub in the central tourist area of Patong near the popular Bangla Road walking street, prompting calls for police to ensure the network of CCTV cameras is still working efficiently and the Pastong Safety Zone, created after the murder of Australian tourist Michelle Smith in 2012, is still in place.

Australian Mark Pendlebury, 59, a highly-regarded expat businessman, is on bail of 500,000 baht over the latest death.

Meetings between the Phuket Governor and the holiday island's honorary consuls, where issues about the safety of tourists and residents were often raised and the need for police vigilance was reinforced, are no longer being held.

It is interesting to note that bearing in mind the millions of baht spent on security cameras they often seem to be in a poor state of repair when it comes to checking footage.

As pointed out by the TPVs those on Bangla are fiddled with but no one seems to 'notice'. One wonders how much of the camera money is actually spent on cameras sometimes- I can think of any number of occasions when they have failed when needed most and not just in Patong.

CCTV is not the be all and end all but what systems are in place have to be maintained if they are to be effective. I have done jobs in the past where people wanted a myriad of cameras installed, only to point out where 6-10 decent ones, concentrating on particular points would be more effective. There are a number of key points in Patong where this would be the case.

Apologies for the long winded response- Sue must be having an effect on me.
