A Pattaya paramedic treats a Polish tourist for his head injury last night

Pattaya Tourist in I Love Phuket T-Shirt Smashed Over Head With Iron Bar

Monday, April 6, 2015
PHUKET: A Polish tourist in an 'I heart Phuket' t-shirt was smashed over the head with a metal rod in a disturbance in Pattaya's walking street about 11.30pm last night.

The man, named as Rafal Ignacy Jakowicki, 55, had too much to drink at a nightclub named Skyfall then became abusive when he returned there and was refused entry.

A security guard said the Pole punched him first before he smashed the Pole on the head with the metal rod, normally used to pull down screen doors.

It's not clear why the security guard chose to take the law into his own hands rather than calling in police.

According to Tourist Police, the Pole lashed out at them too when they answered a call for assistance.

It is not clear whether Mr Jakowicki has been to Phuket this visit or has the 'I heart Phuket' t-shirt from a previous visit to Thailand.

He is likely to have spent the night in the Pattaya police cells and will face assault charges today.

Is this site now "Pattaya-Wan"?...Who cares what happens in that cesspit!

Before people start saying anything about this guy, let's step back, here we get one side of the story, so often we have seen the security dudes being overly aggressive, even here, the guard used a weapon, but no charges against him. Where is the "usual" incriminating video, it seems to be produced when a tourist is in the wrong, but rarely, if ever, when, well you all know how the story usually goes.

Ahhh... more alcohol-related good times in Thailand. I love the statement, "It's not clear why the security guard chose to take the law into his own hands rather than calling in police". How about because the club thug has no self control, and that is the instant reaction as to how to respond to conflict...quick to physical violence. Anyway, the drunken Pole probably had it coming.

Or perhaps not. You have no way of knowing, Ed. Most of us prefer not to sit in judgement of others. It's usually wise.

Unless your subscription is in the mail, you haven't earned the right to tell PW how to do its job, garryj. If it comes for free, make the most if it or go without. Simple enough, eh?

It would appear that the law regarding excessive use of force does not apply when the target is a foreigner.

I remember a case where a bar patron was hit in the head with a golf club on Soi Bangla. Never saw any report about charges pressed against the perp.

If you, asa foreigner in Thailand, even just appear to be doing something wrong, remember that you are fair game to locals who will mete out their own type of justice with the quiet consent of the local police force.

Not even being in a wheelchair will save you from such savage attacks.

The Italian on Soi Bangla was drunk and broke a bottle on a chair before being slugged with the golf club. The perpetrator surrendered to police.

On Phuket, most of the murders of foreigners have been committed by other foreigners. It's true that retaliation by locals occurs too often, but let's not pretend it isn't sometimes provoked.

Guesswork is, as always, unhelpful.

Good point Ed... I stand corrected. For all I know, the Pole was from an NGO and was trying to help a poor lass that was smuggled into Pattaya, and that the bar thug...er, bouncer, really just misunderstood the situation.

where was the usual wolf pack swarm of thai door guards to take the guy down?

Perhaps dog pack attacks are just a Phuket specialty.

Ed, I think you should be more accurate in your reporting. That well mannered pole with a smashed head is wearing a vest/singlet/wife beater, not a T shirt!

the italian has been overcharged and reacted on that, he was walking away when he got hit from behind with the golf club! and the perpetrator today has his own bar in Soi Bangla... ( guess u will moderate me as usual)

was there. I saw the confrontation outside the bar. It was Sunday night sometime around 9:30 or so.
There were 3 Thai bouncers blocking a large foreigner from entering. His small canvas backpack was on the ground just behind him. He was yelling at the Thai guys. A crowd was forming to watch. Apparently they has just "escorted" him out of the bar. There were no marks on him.

The Thais were not aggressive at all. They stood in front of the door with their arms at their sides or folded. He tried to push his way past to go back in. They pushed him back. He tried to punch the Thai guys. They pushed him back. He swung at them again, hitting at least one of them, He threw several more punches. The Thais put their hands up to block his punches and push him back, and hit back to defend themselves but did not act aggressively toward him.

A female staff member ran to get the police. When the foreigner continued hitting the Thais they punched back, never leaving their place in front of the door. As the foreigner persisted, one of the Thai guys (smallest one) ran to a small "closet" outside the bar and grabbed a long thin metal rod that appeared to have a flexible end. I did not see a hook.

As the foreigner continued swinging at the two Thais at the door, the third struck him on the back of the head with the metal rod. It seemed to stun him for a moment (maybe 1 second), then he started punching the two Thais in front of the door again. He was struck on the back of the head again, seemingly stunned, his forehead showing some blood. He touched his forehead, saw the blood, pulled up his shorts and continued punching the two at the door. He never turned around to confront the guy hitting the back of his head. He was struck a third time on the back of the head stunning him again. This time a large gash opened up on his forehead. I did not see a hook but it looked like the flexible end of the metal rod whipped around and hit his forehead as the stiff shaft hit the back of his head.

At this point the foreigner turned around and tried to flick blood from his hands onto 3 female staff who were standing nearby. He aggressively approached the door guards again but did not throw any more punches. A Thai police woman arrived (about 5 ft. tall). He ignored her. He continued to act aggressively but did not touch anyone else. More police arrived and I left.

The Thai bouncers were much more tolerant than I would have been. I wish I had a video.

Experience on Phuket indicates that taking a video to make sure people are safe can get you into more trouble. But perhaps that's just the Phuket ''dog pack attack'' mentality. Pattaya sounds much, much nicer.

@ ED,, i couldn't agree with u more. been in the night club business for 10 year and spend thousands of nights in Patong Bangkok and Pattaya... Phuket is exactly what u say and all is because that police NOT apply the law where its important. securities one and only role is to keep people safe, not what some seems to think the opposite. what strikes me is that ignorance of bar and club owners that at first love to overfill patrons with alcohol and then when mission completed they have no tolerance what so ever for people being drunk,,, ofcoz its not ok to be violent as a guest but many time they just waiting for a reason to start a fight with customers. ...

I've been to Pattay twice both times for a month, never once saw a fight.
