Mayor Still Free as Third Suspect in Phuket Police Attack Surrenders

Thursday, September 19, 2013
PHUKET: A third person wanted over an attack on a policeman at a Phuket football game has surrendered to police, a senior officer said today.

Warrants are still outstanding for two more men, with police still considering possibly laying a charge against the mayor of Cherng Talay, Ma-Ann Samran.

After the attack took place at a local school where a Bang Tao Cup football match was being played, Mayor Ma-Ann promised that he would organise the surrender of prime suspect Wirat Prabpet, 36, to police.

''That hasn't happened,'' said Cherng Talay Police Station Superintendent Colonel Chanuchan Chonsuwat. ''We are still waiting. I don't believe the mayor can do what he said he could do.''

Colonel Chanuchan said he was still in discussion with senior officers about the football attack on Lieutenant Colonel Sommai Ornkam on September 10.

The policeman was badly beaten when he moved to arrest Khun Wirat over an armed bag-snatch in Patong.

Mayor Ma-Ann, who failed to intervene, was a spectator at the match. However, he said he would ensure that Khun Wirat surrendered within the week.

''The mayor was invited to the police station yesterday for talks,'' Colonel Chauchan said. ''We will wait and see.''

On Monday, the third suspect, Wittaya Korlek, surrendered to police. Already in custody are Tepnarin Manabud, 28, and Suchart Wantong, 39.

Khun Wirat and a fifth suspect, Wittaya Korlek, are still wanted.

Facebook posters meanwhile have criticised police for trying to arrest a player during a football match.

Editor Comment:

'Aiding and abetting' is more likely. if 'broken promises' were illegal, the jails would be full of politicians and bar staff.

If the mayor knows where he is and wont give up his location he should be charged and removed from office.

Maybe Thailand should see if they can export this homegrown concept of letting suspects wait to surrender until they feel it is time to do so, that could save a lot of expenditure in the public sector as the police force could be reduced. Maybe it could even mean savings in the prison budgets as well as many suspect apparently choose not to surrender and thus never get to prison ... all in all a win win except for the victims of course.... ;-)
