Plenty of anger and rage was triggered in Bangkok in 2010

Embassy Warns Expat Citizens to Avoid Bangkok Demo Marking 2010 Killings

Saturday, May 18, 2013
PHUKET: A warning has gone out to Canadians from their embassy about possible dangers from a large demonstration in Bangkok on Sunday to mark the third anniversary of clashes in which 98 people are said to have been killed.

The warning comes with Human Rights Watch issuing a call for Thailand's Government to fullfil a promise to impartially prosecute all those responsible for the 2010 political violence.

Citizens of other countries are also advised to stay well clear, whether or not their embassies have sent out emails.

Here is the message to Canada's citizens:

Dear Canadian,

You are receiving this email because you are registered with the Government of Canada's Registration of Canadians Abroad service. Please share the following important information with other Canadian citizens in your area.

Political demonstrations staged by pro- and anti-government groups frequently occur. Some of these demonstrations have led to violent clashes, sometimes involving the use of explosive devices. Several deaths and injuries have resulted from recent clashes.

Further demonstrations, civil unrest, sporadic violence and attacks remain a risk anywhere in the country at any time.

Up to 100,000 demonstrators are expected to gather at a rally in the Rajprasong area of Bangkok on May 19, 2013 to mark the third anniversary of the Bangkok clashes of 2010.

Demonstrations are usually accompanied by a heightened police and military presence and traffic delays. Avoid all demonstrations and large gatherings, military installations, and concentrations of security personnel.

Follow the advice of local authorities and remain informed of current issues by monitoring local media.

We recommend, if possible, that Canadians get in touch with their emergency contacts in Canada to confirm their whereabouts and wellbeing, even if they have not been affected by this event.

Avoid concentrations of security personnel ?

So security personnel actually makes it more dangerous to be around.

Sure I understand what they mean, it's just a funny choice of wording.

That as vital an area of any city as the stretch from the Silom MRT up to Pratunam, including the Chulaongkorn Hospital, could be occupied for weeks is incredible. That the authorities who finally brought the occupation to an end are under attack for doing the job is strange. That the occupiers who torched the likes of Central World want to go free is weird.

The Embassy warnings are just common sense.
