Aussies, Japanese, French and British Among Phuket Speedboat Crash Victims

Monday, October 20, 2014
PHUKET: Two Australians, a French tourist, a Japanese, a Briton, four Koreans and a large group of Chinese were among the passengers on a day-trip holiday speedboat that crashed late yesterday off Phuket, leaving two Koreans missing, feared drowned.

The search for the missing people was renewed today as officials on the island and in the tourism industry assessed the cost of the tragedy.

According to Phuket Provincial Hall authorities, on board the speedboat returning to Phuket from an outing to Phi Phi were: 23 Chinese, four Koreans, two Australians, a French tourist, a Japanese, a Briton and five Thais.

[A Tunisian also appears on the latest list of injured.]

There were also six Thai crew on the speedboat, the officials said.

The two Australians, two rescued Koreans, 10 Chinese, five Thais and the British tourist were treated and in some cases admitted to hospitals on Phuket, some suffering serious injuries.

The captain, who is being questioned by Phuket police, has been named as Surat Marot O-sot. He could be transferred to police in Krabi province later today because the crash occurred in Krabi waters.

Indian tourists Yash Agarwal, 26, and Pankhuri Mittal, 25, drowned when a longtail boat overturned on the short trip between Railey and Ao Nang in Krabi earlier this month.

Terrible news. I did this trip on a speedboat recently and thought the crew were great, very safety conscious and careful. Most of the other boats I noticed that day seemed to also be careful and safe. Not sure what happened but if the result of lack of attention or the like it is certainly not what the tourism industry needs. I am sure there will be accountability. Feel sorry for all the good operators, including the company we went with, that will be tarred with the same brush. Our thoughts are with the injured and the families of the missing.
