Tourists are expected to be able to enjoy a Phuket floating market soon

Phuket to Gain Floating Market to Win More Tourists

Thursday, October 9, 2014
PHUKET: A traditional floating market in Phuket's longest canal is going to be established to promote tourism in Phuket City.

That's just one of the potential boosts for the holiday island as officials from the Tourism and Sport office spend their 60-70 million baht budget.

As well as the floating market, which would be close to the Tourism Authority of Thailand offices and near Old Phuket Town, the cash will be used to erect public toilets at the Saphan Hin park in Phuket City.

The new viewing platform at Rang Hill should open in mid-October while repairs are being made at Cape Promthep and the Charter Bank building renovation has been delayed by 150 days.

Was there ever a floating market in Phuket Town? If so, recreating it is not a bad idea. If not it's just a contrived tourist trap for for the sake of it. A bit like the abandoned building I saw in Siem Reap that had a sign above it saying "charming local market".

You want to see a floating market? Just come to Patong during the monsoon season.

Alternative locations would be Tesco-Lotus and Central Intersections.

A cheaper and better solution for tourist attraction would be fair transportation charges and stopping scam.

Another useless man made attraction instead of protecting what is really important.

The beaches and Phuket's environment.

There is zero tradition of floating markets in Phuket. The once beautiful floating market in Samnan near Bangkok is now a terrible tourist trap.

The one in Phuket will feature on every Chinese Tour group's schedule and sell over priced stuff.

Tuk-Tuk drivers rejoice!

A new floating 'mafia' will be born.

500 baht for a float down the market - 'Oh, I am sorry, you have to take a different canoe for the return..."

The only good thing I can say about this idea is that it's a darn sight better than a dolphin show.

As long as Phuket's longest canal remains a open sewage and half the year just a muddy corridor, we will not see there any floating market. But if you want to shop a a nice dengue fever, sure you have to go there.

Instead the money can better be used for making the Patong beach road a walking boulevard with just 1 car lane + small parking bays for delivery trucks. ( car lane only open from 6am until 12Noon).

So many negative comments if you are so unhappy here go to another country. Talking about over priced tourist areas try Far North Queensland, Australia I paid A$3 for a 1 liter bottle of water which was much higher than 1 liter of petrol but when it is 34C you need water and the tourist areas know that.

Officials of Tourism & Sports have a budget of 60-70 million for just Phuket ?? Wow. Well, suggest: 1, Establish Good public bus infrastructure. 2, Plant trees, trees and more trees! ( turn concrete Patong into a garden town) 3, make a Patong walking boulevard. ( see success/popularity of that in beach cities in other countries). Well, even Krabi is better in that than Patong). Don't think about starting something new as long there is so much to improve about the existing situations on Phuket island. Spend budget on improvements, upgradings, etc.

I just red that Phuket Tourism @ Sport office ( the office with a 60-70 million budget!) is now looking for 200 foreign volunteers during the Asian Beach Games. To guide the sporters and to assist the police. No pay! No salary! Just a shirt, a cap and some food! Is this a joke? Are the 60-70 million budget already gone? No money to employ the beach vendors who now have no job and need to feed their family?

Editor Comment:

Don't confuse objetives, Kurt. There's no reason why Phuket shouldn't find volunteers for a big sporting event. It happens at Olympic Games, even in Europe. Your generosity of spirit seems warped in favor of wrongdoers who are, in some cases, sending their children to overseas schools and driving Mercs and Volvos.

Kidding surely? If not genuine original then has no place in Phuket. Belongs where it is/was the real deal.
