According to the Public Health Ministry, the new strain of flu has claimed 24 lives in Thailand and infected more than 4469. Most patients make a full recovery within two or three days - and most fatalities were among people who had gone to hospital too late.

Engaging in what she calls public diplomacy to argue that Americans have more in common with people around the globe than is often suggested, she blamed the media - not just the news but also entertainment - for distortions. ''People watching a Bollywood movie in some other part of Asia think everybody in India is beautiful and they have dramatic lives and happy endings. Associated Press Southeast Asia's most wanted militant is said to be a masterful bomb-maker and aspiring regional commander for al-Qaida, who has eluded capture for nearly a decade. Malaysian Noordin Mohammad Top, classified by the US State Department as a terrorism financier since the 2002 and 2005 Bali bombings, is believed to have struck again last week with twin suicide blasts at the Ritz-Carlton and J.W. Marriott hotels in Jakarta. ''Noordin is a smart and cunning terrorist,'' saidBrigadier Surya Dharma, former head of the Detachment 88 anti-terrorism unit. ''He wants to show that he deserves to be the commander of al-Qaida here in Southeast Asia.''
The Australian Photographs of a third bomb found in the Marriott, revealed yesterday, showed a laptop bag, lined with steel bolts, ready to accept explosives and other bomb parts. It is not clear whether that device was intended to be used in Friday's attack or was simply a macabre calling card left by Top. Police have also said that the third bomb, found in a ''control centre'' room occupied by the three men on the 18th floor at the Marriott, was ''identical'' to material found at a house in central Java last week recently visited by Top.
