SOUND Phuket Opening Party: Photo Special

Saturday, July 18, 2009
Phuketwan Updating Report: Photo Special

SOMETHING happened last night that probably changed our lives (No, not THAT.)

Phuket joined the jetset.

Last night the island got the nightclub venue it has needed and deserved for a long time now. SOUND Phuket is sensational (or maybe that should be SOUNDsational.)

Somehow, Patong will never seem the same, or sound the same. Goodbye to those nowhere-to-go blues . . . this is The Place.

Party Princess is not given to hyperbole (unless we are talking about good-looking Prime Ministers) but last night was a little like standing on Patong beach in a Summer gale.

In other words, we were blown away.

And for once it wasn't just the Party Princess enjoying herself, dancing alone.

Paradorn and Natalie would have said the same. And they know.

We've never seen a venue on Phuket so packed with people who weren't there just for the free food and drink.

The club has space for 700 guests, and last night it was hopping and hipping.

Born of the Bangkok Bed Supperclub, we think this is a one heck of a SOUND investment for Phuket.

The Phuketwan camera didn't stop clicking all night and we have more photos that will be added to our Photo Special . . . just as soon as we have some sleep.

If you want to find SOUND Phuket, it's in Jungceylon, on the third floor.

Patong Surf Carnival and Cleanup: Photo Special
Photo Special Patong, scene of at least one drowning in June, hosted a mini surf lifesaving carnival on Saturday and will hold a larger event on Sunday. The beach was also cleaned.

Phuket Royal Thai Silk Parade: Photo Special
Fashion Photo Album Phuket produced a stunning parade on the second night of Phuket Fashion Week but the island's cultural cringe kept the crowds away. And that's a shame for Patong.

Swimsuits Plus Tata Young: Photo Special
Updating Photo Album Phuket proved last night that it can handle culture its own way. And all Phuket loves Tata Young and swimsuits. Last night was a treat for the eyes and the ears.

First Phuket Fashion Week Parade: Photo Special
Photo Album Phuket finally saw what the fuss was about when the models took to the long catwalk at Jungceylon. It was just the kind of event the new Patong needs.

Phuket Summertime Summit: Photo Special
Photo Album They came, they saw, they shared a drink or two, and talked about the weather. That was the Summertime Summit, languid and relaxed as a summer's day.

Your report sounds like a promo for this club.

If there is an entrance fee and BKK club drink charges I don't give it much chance of being 'so packed with people who weren't there just for the free food and drink' in the months to come

Editor: Our reporter had a good time, so of course it's a promo! But if the Phuketwan Party Princess didn't enjoy it and think it was a great place, we'd tell you so. We didn't get paid to praise it. Give it a fly and tell us your view.

I was there. Had to wait 15 minutes to get into an elevator as this was the only way into the club. Not a good way to welcome your guests. Too loud--made a 747 take-off sound like a day in the woods. Painful laser & strobe lights. Not sure what the cover will be but if it is high they will have trouble surviving.

Oh dear, another story about Phuket joining ''??the jet set". 1. "jet set" is now such a cliche that I wonder if your writer had her tongue in cheek when writing it (or, more likely, yours when editing the piece - and please read that any way you wish). 2. I was there and was, like all the others, invited, so we were, effectively, there for the food and drink. 3. It was not, to be fair, that good, nor unique. Phuket/Patong has tried these "high-end" things before and it does not work; the market is not sustainable beyond friends and relatives (Sr* P*nw*, for example). 4. Clubs and bars in a shopping centres are not and will never be trendy.

Editor: I am turning the other cheek. We certainly need some new cliches.

I didn't go but heard there was one way in and one way out. Is this within regulations? (I doubt it). There was a fire in some night spot in Patong a while back... I thought the authorities would be much keener on this by now. PhuketWan, try an undercover piece on Phuket's top 5 clubbing spots and visit them on the sly to check fire exits and the like. I'm sure your findings would make for interesting reading.

Editor: I am sure the Sound Club would have a clearly signposted stairway exit, as required under regulations. A former governor did the rounds of Phuket nightspots after the deadly Bangkok New Year blaze. Some failed to measure up, but undertook to make improvements.

I was also at the party and wow, I honestly loved the club. If it was the first club opening party for someone who posted here before then I understand, but I've been to club openings around the world and every time there's sth wrong. Like in Sound the SOUND died for 10 minutes. I felt really bad, like I worked for the club or sth you know. But these are the things that ALWAYS happen. It never should but they still do. One time i remember the drinks in the bar finished in 2 hours, how bad is that? But the club (in europe) still works really well, because people just love it. There is always gonna be negative people, gotta swallow it. And someone mentioned food here? Where was the food? Didn't get a bite!
And the waiting downstairs for the 1 single elevator WAS BAD. But the party was good, that's what matters.
