Top officers on the move at Phuket City Police Station today

Top Thai Police Officer Praises Phuket Task Force: More Charges Forecast

Saturday, September 6, 2014
PHUKET: One of Thailand's top policemen has heaped praise on Phuket's taxi and tuk-tuk task force and said the system used will become a role model for similar investigations elsewhere around the country.

The Deputy Commander of the Royal Thai Police, General Eak Aungsananon, told the media at Phuket Police Station: ''We have to do everything by just means. The 'mafia' is like a cancer that destroys Phuket's economy and reputation.''

His comments came after the investigation's leader, Major General Paween Pongsirin, Commander of the General Staff Division of Police Region 8, reported that there had been 113 arrests in the Kata-Karon phase of the operation.

One of the 82 people for whom warrants were issued in the Patong phase was still at large.

He added that more charges were likely to be laid against former Patong Mayor Pian Keesin, his son Prab and members of the family's Pisona Group business.

''Strong evidence'' had emerged in the continuing investigation, he said.

General Eak said: ''This team is the best role-model for other parts of the country.

''The local people on Phuket are happy, the tourists feel safer. Enforcement is for everyone. We have to maintain proper law enforcement.''

He said the concept of police collecting evidence in advance of arrests and charges had proven ''very effective'' on Phuket and would be useful in other investigations of a similar kind.

He added that more action could be expected on Phuket.

''We will investigate every square meter of Phuket, not just in Karon and Patong, for every kind of criminal,'' he said.

There was also a ''road map'' to maintain momentum once the initial investigation finished, he said.

''Phuket people should be proud of the way these matters are being dealt with,'' he said. ''The people who live here should help to maintain the island properly.''

The general singled out Region 8 chief Major General Panya Mamen and Major General Paween for special praise.

All well and good, but if wealthy people are not punished or put in jail, it will only reinforce the idea the influential can buy their way out of any trouble. The law must be applied equally for all citizens.

So far the Army is doing a great job. Time will tell if they are backed up by local prosecutors and courts. I'd prefer to see these influential people tried in another province where they have no influence.

Far too many cases involving powerful people get reversed in the appeals courts after a few years have passed.

We've all seen this many times.

I am also happy things are changing, but I would like to ask the Question to the Commander - Why is he only acting now and not for the past 5 years?
I am sure his answer will be a wild one!

The Region 8 commander has diligently pursued change since he took charge. I am not sure where he was five years ago. Best ask the officers who were in charge then.

"He added that more charges were likely to be laid against former Patong Mayor Pian Keesin..."

Surely not! That nice Mr Keesin being charged with doing something wrong - never! Eh, Ed?

I'm not sure why your question is addressed to me, Smithy, but our view is that all people are innocent until conviction, and then they have the right of appeal. If you are sure Mr Keesin is nice, you should volunteer as a witness on his behalf.

Phuket is exceptionally safe, compared to developed countries, so much less aggression especially at night given the copious amount of alcohol drunk. Maybe the ease of a lady in the "entertainment" business helps as they rarely reject me, if ever. But then I am an international playboy with exceptionally good looks, fluent in Thai and understand Thai culture, sure 100% Hohohohohohoh.

When is calling a world policing conference to bring this amazing new concept to the world to actually have evidence that the right person has been arrested Interpol CIA FBI the KGB will be in attendance and stunned by this highly advanced technological breakthrough.
