Phuket's Patong beach: No Phuket beaches made the 'Top 25'

Phuket's Best Beaches Miss 'Top 25'

Thursday, April 7, 2011
A READERS' CHOICE selection of the 25 best beaches in the world by TripAdvisor.com does not include any from Phuket or the Andaman coast, with only one Thai beach making the list - in 25th place.

The selection of full-moon party destination Koh Phangan, near Samui in the Gulf of Thailand, probably says more about the habits of some readers of TripAdvisor than reflects a genuine ''Top 25'' candidate.

However, the Trip Advisor site is a powerful source for research by travellers and its selection of ''World's Best beaches for 2011 as chosen by millions of travellers'' is bound to affect the choices of thousands of beach holiday customers.

Anyone who has compared Phangan with the best beaches of Phuket and the Andaman is unlikely to vote for Phangan - unless they are under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Bali also misses out, along with most of Asia and all of Australia.

The beaches closer to the top of the list may be a more accurate reflection of the best the world has to offer in terms of sun, sand and sea - but from a perspective that seems skewed towards American travel destinations.

Here's what TripAdvisor says:

''Inhabited since the year 1000, Aruba is an island rich in history and culture. Eagle Beach is an idyllic Caribbean beach, with white sands and turquoise waters.'' Palm/Eagle beach, Aruba, at number three.

''At only 4.5 miles long, Boracay is small enough to navigate by rented bicycle or motorbike. But don't let its small size fool you'' Boracay, Philippines, ranks number two.

''White-sand beaches, calm clear water and a bountiful barrier reef make the Turks and Caicos island of Providenciales a hot spot for families, snorkelers and divers . . .'' the site says of Providenciales, in top spot.

Jamaica, Mexico, Florida and elsewhere along the US coast figure strongly in other picks.

Why would a Phuket Beach be even CONSIDERED in the world's top 100?
Ocean litter. Drains and filthy klongs emptying directly into the sea.Ripoffs and greed.Beach-chair congestion.Loss of natural environment. Eye and ear infections in sour water.Over-development and lack of access to public beaches.Parking hassels with businesses and Tuk-Tuks who "own" positions nearby.
Need I go on!!??!

Phuket's beaches probably didn't make the grade because they were obscured by a long line of tuk tuks!

Thailand is a lovely place to visit for food and culture,But unfortunetly your beaches are heavily polluted..How can you compare Phuket to say, Tasmania?

Certainly more of an American list, and surprised to see Koh Pha Ngan at number 25. FWIW, as far as beautiful beaches with perfect blue waters go - the Caribbean is indeed hard to match. I went several times to Tulum, which is on this list, and it really was wonderful. I also stayed several times at Isla Mujeres, loved it. That was back in my backpacking days when I was a beach bum. These days I do appreciate that Phuket has so much more than just beaches, though its the beaches that Phuket is sold on...

The fact that they bury garbage on the beaches won't win any votes. Sure 15 years ago it was paradise here, unfortunately that has been lost through greed and corruption and it's not going to stop.

Who want to come and holiday on an open cesspool? Have you seen what's piped into the waters?

...and it's hard to see it is a beach with all the forced use of sunbeds, touts, jetskis, paragliders. Not to mention the litter.

I already spoke many times: Phuket haves what it deserves.

Having been on Boracay countless times in the past 10 years, I can certainly understand why it's so high up in the ranks.

It's the only place I know where everything one may need is on the beach and you never have to wear shoes if you don't want to.

White sand beach sand is actually being sold to other man-made beaches because it's so exceptionally clean and shining white.

Boracay has vendors but they are all registered and carry clearly visible ID cards. A polite "Hindi lang" (No thanks) makes them leave you alone, usually with a smile.

No motorized vehicles are allowed closer to the beach than the main road (apprx 300m inland) for a stretch of about 75 percent of the beach.

The beach is on average 70m wide and buildings and business are restricted to the treeline. Plenty of space to play on the beach but also to sit on the beach having a drink or a meal watching the sunset.

Boracay used to be a playground for the Marcos government big shots with their private villas which have long since been converted to hotels.

The biggest difference to Phuket however is in the attitude of the locals. Filipinos are proud, but not arrogant and certainly not xenofobic.

If you have been holidaying on Phuket in the past few years, here's something you might want to experience for a change:

a holiday on an Island where you actually feel welcome and genuinely appreciated.

Go see for yourself and compare it to Phuket.
