PHUKET: Expat residents from China are expected to pioneer the new regular Phuket-Shanghai service to be launched by AirAsia from February.
Shanghai, with a population estimated by some to top 23 million, has the largest number of residents of any city in China.
An increasing number of expats are choosing to live in Shanghai as China's economic relationship with the rest of the world flourishes.
AirAsia will fly the Phuket-Shanghai service daily via Kuala Lumpur from February 21, an airline spokeswoman said today.
The flight will depart Phuket at 1.30pm for Kuala Lumpur, then fly on from KL at 7.30pm, arriving in Shanghai at 00.45am.
Returning flights leave Shanghai at 1.45am and reach Phuket at 1pm.
AirAsia recently closed its daily Phuket-Bali-Phuket ''paradise to paradise'' flights without warning to turn its attention to expansion in China.
Flights to Shanghai from Bangkok and Chiang Mai via Kuala Lumpur will also launch in February.
The addition of Shanghai will be the AirAsia Group's 14th destination in China after Hangzhou, Beijing, Chengdu, Guilin, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Nanning, Kunming, Wuhan, Chongqing and Xian including Hong Kong and Macau.
Passengers will also be able to book connecting flights from Shanghai to Australia (Sydney, Perth, Melbourne, Gold Coast), Indonesia (Medan, Surabaya, Bali, Jakarta), Thailand (Bangkok, Chiangmai, Phuket, Krabi,) Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh) and Singapore.
China Eastern and Malaysia Airlines also fly to Kuala Lumpur from Shanghai Pudong International Airport.

What's new, with a 6 hour layover in
KL surely this is nothing special. Probably a quicker connection via Singapore or Bangkok with a different airline. Isn't there also a direct flight to HK already so prob quicker that way too.
