Phuket Expat Who Rode Sidecar Bike to Bars is Dead

Friday, November 23, 2012
PHUKET: An expat resident who was a familiar sight on his saamlor motorcycle with sidecar around the bars of southern Phuket died today.

Belgian-born Stanny was 53. He and his wife moved to Rawai on Phuket about four years ago, friends said today.

About 5am Stanny's wife called to say he was not well. Phuket Ruamjai Foundation paramedics carried him to Vachira Phuket Hospital in Phuket City, where he died about 9am.

It is believed doctors at more than one Phuket hospital had advised Stanny to reduce his intake of alcohol but he continued to enjoy his life on Phuket to the end.

Stanny you always joked, but here is one for you, tomorrows headline in Phuket Wan will read,

Sad to hear this and even worse is the fact that in my 8+ years here I've seen the same happen to 4 of my neighbours.

They all drank themselves to death, despite warnings.

Of my current neighbors, which would be about 60 households and around 100 people, there are at least 7 people who use alcohol daily in excessive amounts.

One recently had a bad stroke but that did not slow his drinking down. Even when one of their regular drinking crew just recently died.

Alcoholism is an illness they say, and perhaps so but I find the percentage of expats on Phuket suffering from it alarmingly high.

If compared to locals, it might not stand out but at least when compared to where I come from it most certainly does.

Of all my alcoholc neighbors I would say that 2 are in immediate danger of drinking themselves to death. I don't socialize with them and I'm sure if I went over to suggest limiting their drinking, the reaction would be very hostile.

I don't know if there's anything anyone can do. All but one have live-in partners and I'm sure they have spoken about it ad nauseam.

It's just sad.

@Andrew, having to live with a Thai woman is enough to drive any good man to drink. It was when I stopped allowing Thai women to share the same home with me that I was finally able to stop drinking and start living.

Yes, I would expect their reaction to be hostile if you start lecturing people you don't really know.

R.I.P.
Kind of related to a recent article about "lost" expats in Phuket... however, there are worse ways to leave this world.

Strange how nobody mentioned that the roads will be a lot safer without that motorbike and side on them.

Probably because nobody was that insensitive, Sudoku Nim.

@Sudoku Nim, agree with Ed. but also it is not a "lot" safer.
