An injured man is removed after a crash near Krasom, in Phang Nga, north of Phuket. One person later died in hospital

Phuket Road Toll Includes Three Injured Expats: 218 Deaths in Thailand

Monday, April 15, 2013
PHUKET: Three expats are among the injured on Phuket as a Seven Days of Danger crackdown attempts to make the island a safer place for the Songkran New Year holiday.

After four days, officials have recorded 18 crashes with 18 injured, but no deaths so far on Phuket.

The Thailand-wide picture is more alarming with 218 deaths in the first four days including three deaths north of Phuket in Phang Nga province.

One person from Krabi is among the dead and two Phuket people among the injured in Phang Nga's tally. Nationwide, fatalities are up by eight deaths on last year.

Drunk driving and speeding werel isted as the main causes of 2020 injuries in 1897 crashes. On Phuket, the expats involved were:

Evgeny Konovalov, 29, a Russian, who was admitted to Patong Hospital, on Phuket's west coast, after a motorcycle crash.

Guenter Schiele, 56, a German, who was allegedly drunk when involved in a motorcycle crash and has been admitted to Thalang Hospital in central Phuket.

Mohame Abdecaol, 24, an Egyptian, who was struck by a motorcycle ridden by a Danish man on the footpath outside Simon Cabaret, in southern Patong. He was taken to Patong Hospital with a broken right leg and later transferred to Vachira Phuket Hospital, in Phuket City.

Whilst 218 road deaths sounds high for 4 days, it is actually the average. There are about 20,000 road deaths a year in Thailand (according to published figures), which is about 55 per day. 218 in 4 days is 54.5 per day.

But pleased to see that Phuket is keeping a clean sheet.

Normally comparisions are not a valid point but there are in this case as a life is a life and the consequences are the same. If we look at Australia on Australia Day there are far few deaths than in Thailand adjusting for the higher population in Thailand. However the devastation not only the people who die, but their husbands, wives, children, friends, work colleagues is forever. I am not saying don't have a good time but there needs to be far more Policing for alcohol if driving and far greater penalties if caught drunk, not just kept in a Police check point for a few hours. Huge fines say 5000 Baht minimum or if they can't pay 30 days in jail. Songkran is (in Phuket) one day, death is forever and hurts so many people not just the unfortunate victim.

It's surprising to hear that it's expats who end up in so many accidents rather than visitors to the island. You would have thought that foreign residents here would know better.
