The haul of copy goods found at an undisclosed warehouse on Phuket

Phuket Raiders Nab Copy Goods Valued at 18 Million Baht

Wednesday, August 22, 2012
PHUKET: Officials from the province of Songkhla have raided a Phuket warehouse and seized counterfeit copy goods valued at 18 million baht.

The warehouse at an undisclosed location on Phuket was filled with brand-name luggage, bags, sunglasses, copy CDs and movies as well as untaxed cooking oil and chain saws.

The raiders believe the goods were destinated for sale on Phuket. No arrests were made.

Southern Region Chief of Customs, Prayoot Waneechote, told Phuketwan he believed the people running the copy products business used Phuket as a distribution hub for the entire south.

''The goods are smuggled in from China then kept on Phuket because Phuket is an international tourist destination,'' he said.

''People from a variety of countries can come and go without attraction particular attention. The goods were destined mostly for sale to tourists.''

The raid came at 10am on Tuesday but nobody was apprehended at the warehouse. The goods will be taken back to Songkhla and destroyed.

They missed the chance, to visit Patong and the markets there. Or the weekend market in Phuket town, or the area around Robinson, or..., or...., ....!

Noone in. What a surprise.

There seems no real effort here to stop counterfeit goods trading, beyond being seen to be doing something.

Who owns the warehouse?
Who is the leaseholder?
What were the goods seized? A job lot of junk seconds or the real deal? - I don't see any close up pics, looks more like a salvage yard to me.
