PHUKET: Phuket's electric power network has received a jolt with the opening of a new 500 million baht transmission station on the boom holiday island.
The station is expected to stabilise the power supply and reduce the number of outages on Phuket.
Phuket Vice Governor Somkiet Sangkaosutthirak oversaw the opening of the new facility yesterday in Phuket City with the Electricity Generating Authirity of Thailand's Sudhat Pattamasiriwat.
The facility is networked across Phang Nga and Krabi, where most of Phuket's power is sourced, by links that total 1600 million baht in cost.
Phuket's usage totals 350 megawatts a year but the new plant will enable that maximum to rise to 600 megawatts a year over the next 10 years in a stable environment.
Phuket's rapid growth is expected to continue, especially in tourism and associated businesses. The new facility in Kor Kaew is the third transmission station constructed on Phuket.
