Captain comforts crook: thief Authai Sundorkmai with a victim

Phuket Police Thief Trapped by Pawn Ticket

Friday, May 6, 2011
A THIEF who chose to rob a house in Phuket City happened to steal from the home of the Secretary to Phuket's Police Commander, Captain Thapakorn Hanumard.

Today the captain was prepared to put a consoling arm around the shoulder of confessed thief Authai Sundorkmai, 33, even though some of the stolen goods have yet to be recovered.

Khun Authai, who confessed to seven break-ins, told a media presentation at Phuket City police headquarters that he had to steal to support a methamphetamine habit that was costing him 5000 baht a day.

The break-in at Captain Thapakorn's house took place early on April 29. Two computer notebooks, cameras, five telephones, ATM cards and a pair of sunglasses were among the items stolen.

When Phuket police made a regular check of a pawn shop at Saphan Ruam, east of Phuket City, they discovered a 10,000 baht-plus camera that belonged to the captain had been hocked.

Checking their data base against the information on the pawn ticket for 1000 baht, they raided Khun Authai's address nearby and found other stolen items.

Five of the seven victims have since reclaimed some items, but as with Captain Thapakorn, not all goods are likely to be recovered. Khun Authai recently completed an 18-month sentence for theft.

Coincidentally, the home in Surat Thani of Captain Thapakorn's boss, Phuket Police Commander Major General Pekad Tantipong, was robbed of goods valued at more than a million baht the day after the raid on the captain's Phuket City home.

So are pawn shops regularly checked when anyone's house gets broken into? Seems this is one of the first times this is being reported and yet it was so easy to find him.

Perhaps a list of all pawn shops would be good for those people who like to assist the police in locating their stolen goods.
