Phuket Resort Bus Crashes, Man Seriously Hurt

Phuket Resort Bus Crashes, Man Seriously Hurt

Thursday, May 5, 2011
A STAFF bus for a luxury Phuket resort crashed with a motorcycle and sidecar on the bypass road in Phuket City today, seriously injuring one man.

The bus from the luxury Paresa resort in Kamala, empty except for the driver, was pushed into the ditch dividing the road.

The crash came about 5.30pm when the driver of the sam Laew motorcycle moved out to pass a red-plate car as it slowed to turn left.

The motorcycle clipped the Paresa bus, pushing it into the mid-road ditch.

Police told Phuketwan reporters at the scene that the driver, who was shaken, had dropped off passengers in Phuket City and was heading towards the Thepkasattri Road intersection when the the crash came not far from the Tesco-Lotus intersection.

The driver of the sam laew was seriously injured and may lose a leg, police said. His wife and a sleeping child, who were in the sidecar, escaped unhurt.

Are these sidecars legal ???.
Now Rawai is full of them, with Farangs at the helm of most of them.

Could a motorcycle and sidecar generate enough force to push a bus that size into a ditch? Seems unlikely somehow.

Judging by the skid marks, the bus wasn't exactly driving at a leisurely pace either.

i really really hate these sidecar motorikes. Hardly any of them have lights, they slow traffic down and drive like crap! i hope both of his legs come off!

What an appalling thing to say, pauly. Your brain must lacking compassion.

I don't like "samlo" either but I guess those who get one can not afford to drive something else.....so a little bit of compassion, please !

Xircal You need to look closer as the photographer is trying to paint a picture that is not true (making it look like the bus skidded along until it stopped) when it actual just crossed over a short distance from the left side of the road (those marks are just visible if you look behind the bus and at the other photos) There is no indication from the photos that the bus was going fast at all. All indications are the bus driver turned right at impact the writer is taking leasure with the facts saying the bus was pushed into the ditch.

We're scratching our heads over what you mean by ''taking leasure''. Both the photographer and the writer have provided factual accounts of what took place. Readers provide their own misinterpretations.

ARE motor bikes with side car legal has any one got the answer to this?
to me point one they should have a crash hat on tax and ins and all lights working as well no wander there are so many accidents with them things.
might be time for the police to crack down on them.
I for one have had my fair share of problems with them as well.

Hand made side cars are NOT legal in Thailand... but so are dark tinted windows on cars!

I live near Tesco Lotus. To be honest, I'm surprised there aren't more accidents on this stretch of road. It's one of the most dangerous in the whole of Phuket. All types of vehicles barrel down here at about 120-140 kph regularly, especially the Fortuner-type SUVs. It's a straight road and they seem to think it's Formula One.

mike said: "There is no indication from the photos that the bus was going fast at all."

Not even the yards of rubber left on the road from - apparently - all the tyres on the bus?

It must've been doing at least 80 kph when the brakes were slammed on (clearly without ABS) to leave those skid marks.

To the editor you have got to be kidding. Your photographer clearly took a picture of skid marks leading up to the bus that had nothing to do with the true story. Plus "The bus... was pushed into the ditch dividing the road" is just as inaccurate, your constant need to defend your stories against all comments without excepting your mistakes is getting booring.

What we often have to defend ourselves against, mike, are the carping, anonymous critics who are never at the scene of the events we write about, yet who continue to pretend they somehow ''know'' more than the reporters and photographers who actually talk to those involved and take photographs to show what really happened. That's what's really, really booring.

As usual you are still avoiding the fact the picture is not of the skid marks that the bus made(look close at the other pictures and you can find the true skid marks made so what are you defending other than your attempt to make the public belive in your lie. Even if the bus driver said he was knocked clean to mars your reported did not quote him your reported stated something the facts did not support without backing it up, keep this up some day we will find an honest news source.

We don't set out to lie to readers, mike, but some readers do have fevered imaginations. We had two people on the spot soon after the event. You weren't there. We were the only English-language outlet on the spot. If you don't like what you read, go somewhere else for your news. Stop boring us all with your pathetic artificial attempts at controversy.
