Is there any government agency in Thailand who can stand up to the Tuk Tuk and Jet Ski Mafia of Phuket, or are these business mafia rings more powerful than the government itself? What a sad time for Thailand to be held hostage by thugs.

The main reason why the Tuk-Tuk and Jet-Ski issues do not get resolved is the lack of will to do so.

Since they almost exclusively affect foreigners, it's not something the average Thai would care much about.

Ripping off foreigners, it seems, is considered a basic human right here and plenty of Thais stand up to defend that right whenever a glimmer of hope for change is looming.

After years of empty promises by Thai authorities I can not come to any other conclusion. Perhaps others can.

Dun.....Those who are the "mafia" are the ones working in the gov't agencies....who are they kidding!

Thank you Andrew and zig for your answers. I recon some tit just threw the pearl of the Andaman into a glass of red wine. Ever done that and seen the result? The pearl just dissolves away and so too will Phuket's tourists. This place has a bad rap from tourists and now it is not rocket science to see why. There are some very good reasons for the bad press.

@ Andrew
"Since they almost exclusively affect foreigners, it's not something the average Thai would care much about."
You're so right! The 'average' Thai cares more about 'Why they have to complain about a natural thing? And affect our Thai image, by spreading it as words? Why don't they (tourists/non Thais) get used to it ans shut up?'
You see, for everything, there is always a simple, and easy, solution available. Amazing, isn't it?
I' f.ex., will never use a jet ski, a Tuk Tuk, give my hand to any tout, or take a massage. Ok, that with the massage is maybe not 100% strict and can be changed by pain and the massage tout, sometimes. ;-]
