Young Dutch Tourist Tells Police, 'I Was Raped'

Monday, July 30, 2012
PHUKET: A young Dutch tourist has told police that she was raped in Krabi on Saturday night after having an argument with her boyfriend and setting out to walk home alone from a beach.

Police in Krabi told Phuketwan today that they believed they knew the identity of the suspect and hoped to make a quick arrest. The Dutch tourist, aged 19, had been beaten in the attack.

She had been treated at Krabi Hospital and was allowed to return to her accommodation in Krabi yesterday, sources at the hospital said.

One policeman confirmed that the rape had taken place, but said he was not prepared to reveal more because the news was likely to damage tourism in Krabi. Other police, however, were more helpful.

It is understood the Netherlands Embassy has been informed and is working to have the young woman make a full statement as soon as possible so she can leave Krabi on schedule and be assured that the case will be pursued.

Female investigating officer Lieutenant Amornrat Sudhikerd told Phuketwan this afternoon that the Dutch couple had had an argument at a bar in Ao Nang about 4am and the woman was attacked walking home alone.

Locals came to her aid after the rape and took her first to Krabi Town Police Station, then on to Krabi Hospital, Lieutenant Amornrat said.

The prime suspect was aged 30 and from Surat Thani, she added.

Change the province but the attitude doesn't change! That event might be a good tip for you Ed: to change your opinion of Thai seasides paradise, as well!

Only a fool would change their opinion because of an act of violence of the kind that happens everywhere, Coralie. But don't let me stop you.

How inconsiderate of her being raped, putting tourism at risk in Krabi. This isn't the first case we've read about at Ao Nang, I wonder how many incidents the police brush aside.

Ed, you can stop me whenever you want, but I don't mind because it comes from you!?! However, if Thai Government would close Bars, karaoke and Parlour massage on Phuket ( and anywhere in Thailand ), mines of prostitution, the tourism would drop by 50% to confirm your destorded opinions and ideas about the reality of this place and this country! Maybe you would ask to me, " Why are you still living here, in such bad reality? " The answer is simple, " Because I don't have anything to do with all of those things! "
That's why! Wake-up, ED: you're a dreamer!

I suspect even North Korea has prostitution, Coralie, and the number of sex tourists coming to Phuket is more like 10 percent than 50 percent. Plenty of people, like you, have no connection to prostitution here or in their home countries. It's a bit hard to work out what it is you actually are trying to say.

Two weeks have passed since this rape took place and although the identity of the prime suspect is known to the police, no efforts have been made yet to arrest and interrogate him. The police attitudes seems to be, let the time pass and forget it.

Well this is a nice way to treat people who pore money into that country.
mark my words 'all of the people good & bad will pay for this kind of hospitality to all the people who visit that city town or whatever. when the money goes down, then they will all realize the wrong they let happen. but then it will be to late. I'm sorry for the good people who are trying to make a living in the town they will go broke in..
