Phuket Gem Thieves Crack Two Safes

Wednesday, May 4, 2011
PHUKET police have warned that a safe-busting gang appears to be operating in southern Phuket after jewellery and gems were taken from the homes of two expats.

''My advice would be to store valuables in a vault at a bank,'' said the Superintendent of Chalong Police Station, Colonel Kaitong Jantongbai.

Russian expat resident Evgenii Pozhitkova, 43, reported that thieves struck at his Rawai home while he and his wife were out between 6.30pm and 9.30pm on Sunday.

''My Filippino maids had the day off because it was a holiday,'' he told Phuketwan. ''While we were out, thieves jemmied open the safe and took all my wife's jewellery.

''They left two laptops, telephones and a camera, so they knew what they wanted.''

Another safe was jemmied open in similar style at a house being rented from an expat property developer nearby on the same night.

Estimates were not given on the worth of the thieves' two hauls, but police rate them as valuable.
