Phuket Coast Road Traffic Halts: Truck Crashes into Ditch, Load Blocks Road
By Chutima Sidasathian Tuesday, June 25, 2013
PHUKET: Traffic was halted along the Phuket west coast road north of Patong between Kalim and Kamala today when a truck ran off the road into a ditch.
The large heavy loaded 18-wheel vehicle jack-knifed and blocked almost the entire road about 4pm.
The crash took place in the valley near the Absolute Nakalay Beach Resort.
Police were attempting to find a way to direct traffic around the vehicle but movement in either direction was halted.

Overloaded vehicles trundle over this hill on a daily basis and accidents like this are far from uncommon - no way should they be carrying the loads they do. Cement trucks are a hazard as well - nearly half a lane on the sharp bend just before the Kamala side of the crest is covered in concrete and gravel - a huge hazard to motorbikes but as no one can be identified as a culprit nothing is done. At least the Kamala ambulance has deployed to the Nakalay side of the hill now so is closer when required!

Looks like the truck slipped backwards in that position, whilst maneuvering. The skid marks of 2 wheels, on this PW picture,
( http://phuketwan.com/img/galleries/18339/normal/turk25d.jpg ) are for sure from this truck. Maybe a brake failure on the other brakes? Can be metal on metal, that doesn't brake that well. Does the police look into the reason of the accident, too?

Being cynical, I reckon he was headed towards Kamala (away from us in the picture) and went for an overtake of a motor bike or similar. By the time he realized it was a dodgy or dumb maneuver, he panicked and jumped on the brakes. The off side wheels locked up but the trailer and everything else kept going with all that momentum causing the jack knifing we see. For once accelerating might have got this driver outta trouble. Shouldn't have been going so fast in the first place.
Then again, I might be completely wrong - I'm just guessing.
Good that no-one appears hurt and the biggest damage will probably be to the driver's and a few witnesses' underwear.

A pretty big leap of faith Adam- he would have needed a lot more room to have spun around. Skid marks show he lost it going UP the sharp hill and tried to hold it but was dragged back by the load, ending up in the ditch. Bald tires (?) and no grip - wagons grind to a halt there on a daily basis.
