A young tourist is transferred to another hospital on Phuket today

Chlorine Gas Incident at Phuket Resort: Scores Treated, Then Allowed to Go

Saturday, February 18, 2012
UPDATE

All the guests were treated and allowed to leave hospitals to return to the resort this afternoon.

Original Report

PHUKET: An incident involving chlorine at a Phuket resort led to 37 people - most of them tourists - being treated at hospitals on Phuket today.

One woman, 30 weeks pregnant, was being given special care at Bangkok Hospital Phuket in Phuket City, while 36 others suffered what's believed to be burning sensations in their lungs from chlorine gas.

The incident, first reported as a ''blast,'' led to 26 expat tourists and 11 Thais being taken to Patong Hospital for emergency treatment then ferried to other hospitals around the island.

Thirteen people were admitted to Bangkok Hospital Phuket, eight to Phuket International Hospital and four to Vachira Phuket Hospital.

It is believed staff at the Phuket Orchid Resort and Spa in Karon, south of Patong, wrongly used full strength chlorine instead of diluting it first. The swimming pool was cleaned and being used by guests again this afternoon.

In what was a full-scale alert, the victims were treated in emergency at Patong Hospital with names posted on a list on a wall outside.

Many of the names appeared to be Europeans but no nationalities were given. Several of those requiring treatment were children.

The following is a partial list of names taken from the wall at Patong Hospital.

The list was prepared in an emergency situation so spellings may vary.

Thai News reporting from the boiler room?
Important not to create panic and specify as soon as it is clear that it is not a bomb.

Very scary stuff. Chlorine gas is nasty. Hope no one was seriously injured. Good up-to-the-minute reporting here, and I'm sure no one will complain if some names are spelt wrongly.

The foreign names all appear to be Scandinavian names, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian.

There needs to be less chlorine used and silver added to more pools to keep them free of bacteria.

Chlorine is absolutely bad for humans.

Editor Comment:

Australian DFAT says no Aussies. That part of Karon is popular with Scandinavians.

Orchid Resort is fully contracted to Thomas Cook with customers from Scandinavia in the high seson.

I agree Vfaye as i was telling the Ed that I myself am getting scared for my own safety coming to Phuket now, and its not Paranoia but from what i read which scares me, as all these murders and attempted murders don't have proper reasons for the attacks. So this AM when i saw BLAST i immediately thought it was a follow up on the bomb blasts in BKK. I kept checking back with Phuketwan until i saw the Chlorine story. Now i can rest, but not by the pool!

Editor Comment:

Most murders of expats on Phuket lately have been committed by other expats, which says more about the places people are coming from than this tropical holiday island. The use of the words ''strangled'' and ''murder'' in connection with an unfortunate suicide reflects more on circulation-boosting tabloid journalism than reality. Whether you jump to wrong conclusions is your own affair.

Incredible though that this is looked upon as a simple mistake, maybe too many mistakes every day!

Whilst i agree that Chlorine is bad for humans, it is also very necessary for life to be sustained and without it most life forms will simply die. It a bit like banning Hammers because someone got hit over the head. When handled and used in the correct manor, chlorine is a very effective biocide. I work in Phuket for a water treatment company (cleaning water storage tanks not pools) and whilst certain levels of cleanliness are maintained in other areas of the premises frankly the standard of the work and training in water treatment i have seen is either non existent or well below standard. When will Hotels and Guesthouse take water treatment more seriously and avoid accidents like this happening?
