Patients being transferred from Patong Hospital to Phuket City yesterday

Phuket Chlorine Gas Victim Still 'Serious' and in Intensive Care

Sunday, February 19, 2012
PHUKET: One of the victims of yesterday's chlorine gas leak remains in a serious condition in hospital on Phuket today despite assurances that all tourists had returned to the resort involved.

The Phuket media at Phuket Orchid Resort and Spa in Karon were told yesterday that all tourists affected by the gas cloud had returned to the resort.

Twenty-six tourists, including children, were affected, along with 11 Thai resort staff.

However, a check by Phuketwan today established that Annika Ober Hrnic, 26, from Sweden, remains in the intensive care unit at Bangkok Hospital Phuket, in Phuket City, where she was transferred after initially being treated at Patong Hospital, north of Karon.

It is not clear why the Phuket media was given the wrong impression about the condition of the Swedish citizen, who is seven months pregnant.

She was reported to be the only person in a serious condition after yesterday's disturbance at the resort led to tourists and staff being ferried to hospital on Phuket with burning lungs and irritated skin.

When Phuketwan called the resort today to make sure all the other patients were at the resort and not receiving further treatment, we were advised to call back on Monday.

Phuketwan is not able to confirm whether Annika Ober Hrnic was released, and suffered some kind of relapse, or has been in hospital since the incident.

All the affected tourists and staff were told to contact hospitals quickly if they had any concerns about their health.
