Cleanup coming at last at congested, chaotic Phuket airport

Phuket Airport Chaos: 'We're Starting Over'

Friday, August 9, 2013
PHUKET: Airports of Thailand is willing to sacrifice 36 million baht in income from Phuket's taxi and limousine services if Phuket wants that to happen, AoT chairman Siaw Thiwari said today.

And he said that from August 31, all existing contracts with taxis and limousines will have to be renegotiated.

More dramatic developments can be expected as the Big Cleanup swept across Phuket today.

Twenty-three illegal taxi driver were arrested at Phuket Internantional Airport this morning. More are likely to follow.

The hotlines have yet to be established to Phuket's two Crime Crisis Centres. But the Department of Special Investigation was saying to residents, expats and tourists today: ''Just walk in, either at the airport or at Phuket City Police Station.''

Tomorrow, a representative from the DSI will be a speaker at a day-long seminar for Phuket taxi drivers.

Speakers also include Phuket Governor Maitree Intrusud, who has given Phuket's taxi drivers his version of the word SERVICE.

The Governor's speech to kick off the seminar at the Merlin Hotel in Phuket City is headed: ''You are a taxi driver and an important person for Phuket.''

He will be followed by a spokesperson for the Business and Tourism Association of Phuket, speaking about ''What Taxis have to Do With Tourism.''

Next up, a DSI representative will explain about taxis, abuses and rip-offs.

The DSI talk will be followed by Phuket police, a speaker on the media and taxis, and the impressions of passengers as compiled by a Phuket professor.

Arrived at Phuket Airport.
Took Limousine No 126.(Phuket Limousine and Business Service Co-Operative Ltd.)
THB 750.- (6 hours earlier I had a limousine from the southern tip of Koh Chang to Trat Airport (1 1/2 hour trip) for THB 400.- including ferry)

As I did not talk anything the driver assumed I am tourist.
Another man entered the Car.
I did end up in a Tour Company just outside the airport who did not take a no for an answer and wanted me to leave the car!
I called the Limousine company 076-351347 and I got the following answer. "The driver assumed you are tourist and he is new"
When asking if it would be accepted to do this to a tourist I could not get a straight answer!

All Phuketians, Thais and foreigners, want a modern air-conditionned bus transport system and all metered-taxis and tuk-tuk equiped with taximeters which records the route and indicates the rate charged and the amount payable.

The Main and first word should be S for "SAFETY".R for "Rapidness" should be completely dropped. This is the ROOT of the problem ! Think SAFETY not speed, WAKE -UP...
