Patong's Safety Zone has national importance, according to police

Patong Safety Zone Gains 82 More Security Cameras at 37 Sites

Thursday, October 25, 2012
PHUKET: More than 80 security cameras are to be added at Phuket sites under the Patong Safety Zone strategy, the Deputy Commander of the Thai Royal Police heard yesterday.

Major General Chalermkiet Sriworakan was in Patong at the Phuket Graceland Resort and Spa to hear an update on the safety zone project.

Patong has been divided into six sections, each with its own dedicated policy contingent and a team of local residents who have been trained to recognise and report unusual behavior.

The strategy is reported to have cut the crime rate as well as increased the speed with with some perpetrators are apprehended.

Major General Chalermkiet has made several visits to Patong because the plan is for the national government to implement the strategy around Thailand once its success has been proved on Phuket and in neighboring Phang Nga province.

Under the plan, another 82 security cameras are to be added at 37 sites around Patong, Major General Chalermkiet was told yesterday.

They haven't actually "gained" anything yet, does anyone know if they have fixed the existing 19 of 33 cameras, remember a previous story stating only 14 of 33 cameras working.

Right.

I was on Bangla last night and saw 2 touts handling slow lorises and pushing them on tourists for a photo opportunity.

I wonder when the first arrest of such people will be done by using these marvellous CCTV cameras. Should be as easy as a walk in the park.

Unless of course someone has been convinced to look the other way.
