Passengers come off the Phi Phi ferry at Rassada Pier in Phuket City

Australian Tourist Dies Waiting on Phuket for Phi Phi Ferry

Friday, September 14, 2012
PHUKET: An elderly Australian woman collapsed and died while waiting on Phuket today to board a ferry to go to Phi Phi.

It is believed the woman, aged 83, was a tourist staying at a resort in Karon, a Phuket beach destination.

An elderly man travelling with the woman told police that he was not her husband. It is suspected that the woman died of a heart attack.

Charity foundation paramedics attempted to revive the woman at Rassada Pier, the popular departure point in Phuket City for Phi Phi ferries.

However, they could find no pulse. The woman was taken to Vachira Phuket Hospital as cpr was being performed, without success.

An average of 50 Australians die each year on Phuket, mostly of natural causes or motorcycle crashes, according to embassy officials. Her body is now at the hospital's morgue.

The average of one Australian death every seven days is greater than in Bali, where an Australian is said to die every nine days.

According to embassy officials, an Australian dies every three days in Thailand.

Very sad story and my condolences to the family and friends but in all honesty hot tropical climates are perhaps not the best of destinations for people her age.

Whenever a heat wave strikes a country with usually lower temperatures the elderly are the first ones to suffer and often become fatalities due to heart attacks.

@Andrew, unless the lady comes from tasmania, she would be well and truly accustomed to the weather in Phuket, there is no way you can say it is "hot tropical" weather or can it be a "heatwave", to to many areas in Australia, during summer, then you'll know what heat really is, I', talking high 30's to low/mid 40's. Heart attack maybe, but due to heat...NO.

@Andrew, by the way, today, according the weather forecast, only 28 degrees, no way considered hot, unless you live in mmm Alaska

Interesting.

I guess what I keep reading in the news must be wrong. Take heat waves in countries like Greece or Germany for example and you can see the first casualities are always the elderly and mostly dying from a heat induced heart attack.

Normal temperature there usually does not exceed 35C but when it goes over 40C, casualities start mounting.

I would argue 83y qualifies as elderly.

I'm neither a doctor nor a forensic scientist but I can read.

Any death is of course sad, but in truth I hope I live to be 83 and die instantly, while on vacation...
