Christian Werner Roth, believed to have been a staffer at Angsana Phuket

Phuket Wrong Way Smash Kills Expat Beach Club Manager, Injures Three

Friday, September 14, 2012
PHUKET: A man carrying a Mexican driver's licence was killed travelling the wrong way on Phuket's main road when his car crashed into an oncoming vehicle early today.

He is believed to have been beach complex operations manager at Angsana Laguna Phuket. His relatives have been notified, police said.

The man was named by police as Christian Werner Roth. According to ID, he would have been 30 years old in November.

The General Manager of Angsana Laguna Phuket, Jerry J. John, said this afternoon that Mr Roth spent much of his time at the recently-opened Xana Beach Club, on the foreshore near the Angsana.

''We are all deeply shocked by this tragedy and still absorbing the news of Christian's death,'' he said. ''Our thoughts go out to his family. We will help in any way we can.''

Three people in a car travelling south on the correct side of Thepkasattri Road in the Srisoonthorn district north of the Heroines Monument, were hurt when the vehicles collided.

It's feared Mr Roth may have spent most time in a country where motorists drive on the right side of the road and that he became disoriented while driving on Phuket at 2.45am.

The three people injured in the smash in the other car were taken to Phuket International Hospital in Phuket City.

They were named as Kitkarn Manjid, 23, the driver, Tasksin Sirijan, 23, and Kuntap Arelaisuk, 21. Khun Kuntap was admitted to the intensive care unit.

A disproportionate number of expats die on Phuket's roads, either from motorcycle crashes or alcohol-related incidents, usually after midnight.

The Public Health department is campagning to reduce Phuket's road toll deaths from 116 in 2011 to 50 by 2014 by educating drivers and obliterating Phuket ''black spots'' for crashes.

Mr Roth's body is at Thalang Hospital.

Very sad but you have to wonder how anyone driving in Phuket for more than a few minutes let alone has been working there for a while would be driving on the wrong side of the road! Further reports will no doubt confirm his "disorientation".

This is terrible. I recently read an interesting article about Christian. He had an interesting life and great plans for XANA.

02.45 a.m. coming from a club / bar and happening on the wrong side of the road... Are victims checked for blood alcohol ? This fact is hardly mentioned in reports... also not in the case of the 2 french bike riders who crashed in Karon lately

The article doesn't say he was coming from a club/bar. That's just your guesswork.

Basically right, Editor, but you don't need to be a Sherlock if you know where the Laguna complex is and read where the accident happened, to take this possibility into consideration.

It's certainly a possibility. But as life teaches us all, it's better to deal in facts.

Is there a Thai law that requires motor scooter rental agencies to check the renter for his/her MOTORCYCLE license? So many lives in Thailand would be saved.
