The man, formally identified as Joshua John Smits, 24, was transferred from Patong Hospital to the better-equipped Vachira in Phuket City after he leapt from a third-floor room at the new Patong hotel.
He suffered head injuries in the leap but the cause of death is thought to be a heart attack. There has been no explanation for his behavior.
Mr Smits startled a maid who was making up the room at the hotel when he ran through the street, up the stairs, through the room and jumped from the balcony.
Bar owners in Patong later reported a man answering Mr Smits' description had been behaving in an odd manner.
In Thailand, the ground floor is considered to be the first floor so in many other countries, the balcony would be categorised as being on the second floor.
Mr Smits had been holidaying on Phuket with a group of friends. His family has been notified of his death.
