THE ibis Phuket Kata is set to open on December 1, along with several other resorts on the island. But the ibis is different, apart from a preference for the lower-case i.
This resort, part of what they call ''the worldwide economy hotel brand'' of the Accor group, continues to set standards in ways of using new technology to make for a more competitive outlook.
While the resort has almost 260 rooms, general manager Frederic Garnier will have just 80 staff. This is much the same ratio as in the existing ibis in Patong.
Most hotel brands expect a ratio of 1:1 when it comes to staff and guests. Not ibis. The internet is essential here for dynamic pricing, and the other key factor is a centralised accounting system in Bangkok that applies for a growing number of ibis three-stars around Thailand.
The new ibis Phuket Kata becomes the sixth opening in one and a half years of operation, strengthening its brand position as ''the leading economy hotel in Thailand''.
''Newly built, modern, bright and light filled,'' the media release says, ''ibis Phuket Kata is a simple yet trendy, top value resort which lies minutes from the beautiful clear waters of Kata Beach.
ibis Phuket Kata rooms include a balcony, air conditioning, satellite TV, Wi-Fi internet access as standard.
''Those looking for a touch of local traditions should not miss the hotel's unique course of Thai massage being offered at the beautiful Thai salas along the swimming pool,'' the release says.
As with the Patong ibis, there's a TASTE restaurant with guests having access to 24-hour snacks and drinks from the reception lobby area, and a breakfast that is ideal for nightlife, served from 4 am until noon.
A virtue of the new technology approach is that rates vary from 850 baht for May to September to 1600 baht from December to March.
The upside is that if you are looking for a place to stay, the ibis offers competitive pricing and genuine quality.
The downside comes if you happen to be looking for a job in hospitality on Phuket: there may not be so many positions available, if the ibis way proves to be the path to the future.
