Questions are being asked: Damrong ''The Demolisher'' Pidech this week

Phuket Park Probe Team Sacked: Others Given Results Deadline

Friday, September 14, 2012
PHUKET: One of the investigating teams looking at resorts and villas suspected of encroaching on Phuket parkland has been sent packing for not performing well. The others are not allowed to leave Phuket until the job is done.

The Director General of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, Damrong ''The Demolisher'' Pidech, ordered the underperforming team to head home as he set a new deadline of September 25 for all the accusations and counter-claims to be on the table.

On Wednesday the claims of encroachment involving the Trisara Resort were taken to police at Thalang.

Khun Damrong said there were signs that the land titles had been tampered with. Some of the titles were blotched and some numbers on the documents appeared to have been altered.

Trisara General Manager Anthony Lark told Phuketwan that he was unable to comment but would pass on a request for a response to the owners in Bangkok.

All of the properties under examination border Phuket's Sirinath National Park. The Director of the Park, Cheewapab Cheewatam, said he had been ordered to report to Khun Damrong every day.

Twelve teams from other parts of Thailand, off Phuket, have been brought to Phuket to each investigate one of the 12 projects under examination.

The team from Korat, which was looking at the claims made about the Andaman White Beach Resort, had been ordered home for failing to update Khun Damrong regularly and allowing the project to be delayed.

One difficulty has been the lack of expertise in reading satellite photographs of the region around the Sirinath park. An expert satellite map reader is being sought from the Forests Department in Chiang Mai to carry out the task on Phuket.

All the teams have been told by Khun Damrong that they will not be leaving Phuket until their investigations are complete.

The five stages of investigation in Thailand.

1.) Wild enthusiasm
2.) Slow descent into despondency
3.) Total abandonment
4.) A search for scapegoats
5.) Promotion of the guilty, punishment of the innocent.

It's great to see BKK officials asserting their authority over those on Phuket.

Corruption is so entrenched on Phuket that any meaningful change can only come from the outside.

I wish best of luck to Khun Damrong.

I'm sure heads will roll, hopefully not his like was the case with his brother in arms Pol Col Dussadee, who was suddently transferred when his investigations came too close to comfort.
