Money business on Phuket City's favorite hilltop, where a new eatery will open

Phuket Hilltop Gains a New Restaurant and Shop

A NEW restaurant, shop and toilet block is being built on Khao Rang, the popular viewing spot in Phuket City that has become a compulsory stop for bus tours to Phuket.

The Phuket City municipality auctioned a 30-year lease on the restaurant and shop before construction began, leaving the present occupiers of the old-fashioned shop unable to compete.

The two-storey restaurant is being built below the existing level of the car park, so the restaurant will not be obvious beneath the much larger shop.

Erection of the structure will mean that for the first time since opening in 1973, the Tunk-Ka restaurant on the hilltop will have competition.

On the day that Phuketwan visited the hilltop recently, a family of walkers who had exercised their way up to the peak fed a troop of abut 20 monkeys.

Editor Comment:

Well above, but some buildings were in place before the limit became law and others are replacement facilities.

Scary! Those are some brave walkers feeding those little beasts.

I wonder if the tourists and garden workers alike will have to pay to use the toilet, which is the case with the original old-fashioned shop?

In 25+ years with numerous trips to this mountain, I've never seen any monkeys there. I'll have to keep my eyes open next time. BTW, Kho is an island, Khao is a mountain.

If the Rang Hill walkers are on a daily schedule, try being on the top about 5-5.30pm. We counted at least 20 monkeys on Saturday. Yes, khao it is. Thanks.
