Location of Fisherman Harbor, near the 'Patong River' canal

Phuket Resort Rooms Boom Unabated

Thursday, October 21, 2010
THREE resort projects that came before the governor's special committee on the environment yesterday will add almost 1000 rooms to the rapidly-growing resort-hotel stock in Patong and on Phuket.

Other condo and land plot projects will add 2500 units, with two large developments scheduled for Phuket City, the committee heard.

Resort-hotel projects on the way for Patong include Sleep With Me (286 rooms) extending the quirky existing brand into new premises near the Jungceylon shopping mall; All Seasons Patong (318 rooms) for Rat-U-Tit 200 Pi Road, on land leased from a temple near the water treatment plant; and Fisherman Harbor (380 rooms) at the southern end of Patong, near the canal.

Patong will also gain The Crystal Patong, a condominium development of 113 rooms in eight storeys on Baramee Road.

The head of Phuket's Natural Resources and Environment Department, Ong-Art Chanachanmongkol, chaired the committee meeting at the department's HQ in Phuket City.

Khun Ong-Art said land in Patong had become impossible to buy, and it was interesting to note that both the Sleep With Me project and the All Seasons development would be built on leased real estate.

The number of resort rooms and property developments being submitted to the committee for approval continues to provide an indication that investors see endless growth in Phuket's tourism industry.

The governor's special committee was established by former Governor Wichai Praisa-ngob to overcome abuse of the previous approvals system. Yesterday, about 20 experts on the panel examined the briefs for the projects and questioned aspects of some of them.

Sleep With Me will have to produce more results of soil testing for foundations while another check is to be made on the 22.95 metre height of the Fisherman Harbor development before approval can be given.

The City Condominiums by Phanason Residences will add 1410 condos south of Phuket City in Vichitsongkran Road, while Chaofa Garden Homes 3 is to establish 1085 plots in the Kor Kaew district of Phuket City.

Its the way to go, get rid of the jungle and build houses!! It is most definitely not a tropical paradise any more! Just got back from a good month at TMT, sober for the whole month, drove around a lot, got to c a lot, didn't like it all, just the traffic, and that's during low season!!

it is a shame to see that we speak about more and more construction without taking care of the environment and necessary infrastructure.
No public parks, no public swimming pools, the rules seeming to be covering every green place with ugly tall cubics of concrete.
In the same time roads are not repaired, traffic lights not working, roads flooded for months...etc, etc.
Am thinking seriously to relocate.

There are public swimming pools and public parks here in Phuket. Obviously the Hotel professionals seem to think that Phuket is an up and coming destination.

Editor Comment:

How many new public parks and new swimming pools are being created, Benjie? That was the point. Lots of new developments, but with no new parks and no new swimming pools.

Just off the top of my head, there is a new and well equipped public exercise park and swimming complex near the entrance to Laguna.

Saddened to see the rapid demise of Phuket as an an appealing destination-over developed-ugly unpainted shop houses all over. MANY other resorts - even in the UK - are far more attractive now !
