Phuket Flyin' and Fryin' Fun Will Celebrate US Independence

Phuket Flyin' and Fryin' Fun Will Celebrate US Independence

Monday, June 24, 2013
PHUKET: July 4th marks America's 237th birthday.

To celebrate, the US Navy League of Phuket, with Rotary of Patong and Lions Club, are putting on two full days of entertainment, flying demonstrations, games, music, and fun for the entire family on Saturday and Sunday, July 6-7, at the Phuket Airpark in Paklok.

''It will likely be the largest such event ever seen in Southeast Asia.'' says Joe Blasy, of the Phuket Navy League.

Attendees will experience a real American-style picnic complete with American food and beer. Hungarian stunt flyer Les Vorosmarthy, who lives in Kuala Lumpur, will be conducting stunt flying demonstrations both days.

The Royal Thai Navy and Royal Thai Police will each be conducting demonstrations with their respective helicopters. There will be fly overs and landings of various aircraft all day each day, including paramotors, paragliders, and skydivers.

''Anyone feeling brave enough too accompany Les in the backseat (actually front seat) of his Extra 300 stunt aircraft can do so,'' Joe tells us. But not without a donation to charity, of course.

There will also be helicopter, airplane, and static hot air ballon rides available. All proceeds from the event will got to charitable causes via the US Navy League of Phuket.

There will be lots of free activities for kids, including a play area, bouncy castle, slip n' slide, kayaking on the pond, and street performers. Plus fireworks just after sundown each day.

The 'Burning Bum Chili Cook-off' will take place on Saturday.

The US Navy League of Phuket organise all community service projects (COMSERV) for visiting US sailors which benefit local schools and retirement homes.

For more info, to volunteer at this event, or to become a Navy League member, (US citizenship is not a requirement) you can visit the Phuket Navy League website, www.navyleaguephuket.org.

It's a good way to ensure an invitation to visit US carriers and battleships that visit the island. Navy League Members and former servicemen and women get priority.

The Phuket Airpark is east from the Heroines Monument (follow the signs). Admission is free.

I'm not American, but I'm sure to bring the family to this. Sounds like a great day out!
