NIPPERS and big dippers take to the ocean at Patong on July 11-12 for the second Phuket Lifesaving Carnival.
Saturday July 11 will see the juniors turn out for a series of fun events in the water and on the sand from 8.30am until 1pm, at Loma Park.
Events will include beach sprints, swimming races, boogie board races or nipper board races and for older children, a beach flags race and a tug-of-war.
The ''nippers'' will be graded into categories by age.
Sunday will bring the over 18s into action (along with the overs in different age categories all the way up to over 50s.)
International visitors will compete with the locals. From the special opening ceremony at 9am, expect a whole day of exciting sand and sea activity.
Last year's first carnival was an introduction to the kind of beach rescue culture that works well in Australia, where swimmers on protected beaches seldom drown.
A series of canivals for ''nippers'' at popular beaches have helped in the year since to introduce young locals who want to enjoy the water safely to the principles of lifesaving.
Local resorts are supporting the carnival with lunchboxes for competitors. A dinner at Le Meridien Phuket Beach Resort in the evening will complete the event.
Yet to come this monsoon/summer/green/wet/rainy/ season are two more surf board-riding carnivals at Kata and Kamala.
